Blaze The Way did everything but blaze the way at Naas. It was a much worse performance than expected, and I'm not sure why.
Maybe the ground wasn't to his liking, but he was beaten a long way from home. His jumping was iffy over a few, and I don't think he was helped by going widest of all of the runners. Maybe back into handicap company is when we'll see the best of him, or on slightly better ground.
It's good news coming out of the Nicky Henderson yard about Sir Gino. He is out for the season, but at least his health is fine, and he is still with us. We still don't know whether he'll continue to race, but that's totally irrelevant. If he does return, let's hope he's the same horse, but that might be a tough ask.
Good To Be Alive 9/4 (2pt) – Plumpton 2.50
These are the races I like to get involved in. You have unexposed youngsters against proven handicappers, and trying to figure out who will come out on top is what makes this such a great game.
Ike Sport has returned to form with a second and then a respectable sixth at Kempton in the Lanzarote. Based on that, and on form from last year in good handicaps, he is going to be the one to beat. He isn't the market favourite, as Lucky Manifest and Good To Be Alive hold that spot, but he has to be respected.
Good To Be Alive was always going to be my selection in this race, as he finished secondto Came From Nowhere. The winner was an impressive winner when tipped up at Ascot last time out. Obviously, he has improved and probably wasn't asked for 100% when these met, but the form is there for all to see.
Soft ground and a slightly longer trip should be what Olly Murphy's horse needs at this stage of his career. He has been staying on in his races from the rear in both of his starts for his new trainer, so he must enjoy the extra furlong he tackles today. I can't see a horse on as good of a handicap mark as Came From Nowhere was, so this is an easier assignment despite going up 2lbs for the second-place finish.
Lucky Manifest has some solid handicap form, with the runner-up to A Pai De Nom being franked with a good run in the Lanzarote, but he might be on a tough enough handicap mark. Of the rest, nothing stood out like a threat.
