In terms of outsiders, there are not many who catch my eye at huge odds. However, in terms of value, one thing got my attention.
Spillane's Tower 4/1 – Aintree 2.55
If the same Jango Baie turns up from Kempton and Cheltenham, he should win this race with ease. It's a race that Nicky has won in the past with Might Bite and Shishkin, and this lad looks like a really top stayer in the making.
However, if for whatever reason he isn't in the same form at the Gold Cup run, which does take a lot out of a horse, Spillane's Tower is the value play.
My only concern for Spillane's Tower is the slightly quicker ground that he'll get at Aintree, as his best runs have come on a testing surface. The trainer would have known that the ground wasn't going to be soft, but they still opted for the trip across and is still entered with less than 24 hours to go, so they must be confident he'll be fine on the good to soft.
Spillane's Tower has always hinted at having plenty of ability, but after running well a couple of seasons ago to be second to Fact To File, he hasn't been great. Last time out at Cheltenham Trial's Day in January, he looked mightily impressive in the Cotswold Chase, beating L'Homme Presse. That form alone isn't going to be good enough, so he'll have to improve again if he wants to beat the favourite, but it is possible on the back of a tough race a month ago for Jango.
