After returning to winning ways in Alkmaar on Sunday, Tuesday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me focus on the English Championship, and I’ve highlighted a goal-based selection in one of the fixtures.
⚽️ Southampton vs West Bromwich Albion
🏴 Championship
⏰ Tuesday 9 December, 19:45
Resurgent Southampton will look to continue their climb up the Championship table on Tuesday night as they welcome travel-sick West Brom to St. Mary’s in a fixture that I’m keen to get the hosts on side.
Southampton decided to bin manager Will Still after winning just two of his opening 13 Championship fixtures in charge of the Saints, with Under-21’s head coach Tonda Eckert initially taking temporary charge.
The young German has made quite the impact at St. Mary’s, as he won each of his opening four games in charge, and despite then losing 3-2 away at third-placed Millwall, he was given the job permanently.
In his first permanent game in charge on Saturday, the Saints returned to winning ways as they defeated newly-promoted Birmingham City 3-1 to make it three consecutive wins at St. Mary’s and move them up to 11th in the Championship table, just three points outside the playoff places.
West Brom have won just four of their last 15 Championship encounters, and travel to St. Mary’s having lost each of their last six and seven of their past eight road trips, shipping 15 goals across those defeats.
West Brom were beaten 3-1 at QPR on Saturday, meaning Ryan Mason’s men have won just four of their previous 15 Championship encounters (W4-D3-L8), meaning they have slid down to 16th in the table, two points behind their hosts.
That defeat also continued the Baggies’ horrendous form away from home, as they have lost each of their last six and seven of their previous eight road trips in the Championship.

Bet of the Day
As alluded to, Tonda Eckert has made quite the impact since taking over from Will Still, winning five of his six games in charge of the Saints – including all three at St. Mary’s – and will be confident of claiming another maximum against a poor-travelling West Brom side.
The Saints have fired in a remarkable 18 goals across those six matches under the German tutelage, notching 2+ goals in all six (100%) of them, and 3+ in four of the last five – including in all three on home soil – and should possess too much firepower for a Baggies backline that has shipped 15 goals across their last eight road trips.
- Southampton to Score Over 1.5 Goals
- Pays 10/11 (William Hill)
