Football Bet of the Day: Lean on Lille on Friday Night

Following on from last night’s lack of cards at Stamford Bridge, Friday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me me focus on Lille’s clash with Marseille in Ligue 1.

Champions League-chasing Lille will look to continue their strong home form as they welcome fellow European hopefuls Marseille to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

After heading into the international break off the back of successive draws at home to Rennes and away at surprise-package Brest, Lille gave their Champions League qualification hopes a major boost as they defeated rivals Lens 2-1 at home last Friday night. Not only did that victory move them four points clear of 6th-placed Lens – and three above 5th-placed Nice – but they know a win against their poor-travelling opponents on Friday night can see them climb above Monaco in 3rd and move just a point behind 2nd-placed Brest, at least temporarily.

Jean-Louis Gasset made an immediate impact since taking charge of Marseille a couple of months ago, as he won each of his opening five matches in all competitions, but the honeymoon period is well and truly over. OM have lost each of their previous three fixtures – including a pair of 2-0 defeats away at fellow European rivals Rennes and home to perennial champions PSG – to leave in 7th position, seven points behind their upcoming opponents in 4th, but above both Rennes and Reims only on goal difference.

Bet of the Day

Paulo Fonseca’s hosts currently boast the best home record in Ligue 1, collecting 30 points from a possible 39 (W9-D3-L1), with that solitary defeat coming in a 1-2 loss against Reims way back at the end of last September. Marseille, on the other hand, currently possesses the joint-worst away record in the French top flight, picking up just 10 points from a possible 39 (W2-D4-L7), with that record unbelievably changing to W0-D0-L7 when travelling to sides currently positioned in 10th and above.

Whilst I was tempted just to back the Lille win at 6/5 (Bet365/Unibet), I’m happy to play it a little safer and back Lille -0.25 Asian Handicap. This would mean if the game were to end in a draw, we would only lose half our stake, whilst a win would reward us with a full payout.
