Record Greek champions Olympiakos welcome Turkish giants Fenerbahçe to the Karaiskakis Stadium in the first leg of their quarter-final Europa League tie in a fixture that appeals to me for goals.
After finishing 3rd in their Europa League group behind both West Ham and Freiburg, Olympiakos saw off Hungarian champions Ferencváros 2-0 on aggregate in the playoff round before their thrilling last-16 tie with Maccabi Tel Aviv. José Luis Mendilibar’s side lost the first leg 1-4 in front of their supporters but won 1-4 in neutral Serbia inside the 90 minutes before scoring twice in extra time to secure a dramatic 7-5 aggregate success. Domestically, The Erythroleykoi are involved in a four-way battle at the top of the Greek Super League, as they sit in 4th position, just four points behind leaders PAOK.
Despite losing two of their six group stage matches, Fenerbahçe managed to top their Conference League group to avoid the playoff round and go straight into the last 16. Despite losing the second-leg 0-1 at their atmospheric Istanbul base, İsmail Kartal’s visitors knocked out Belgian league leaders Union Saint-Gilloise thanks to an impressive 0-3 victory in Belgium to set up this quarter-final tie. Domestically, The Yellow Canaries are involved in an exciting title race themselves, as they currently sit in 2nd position, just two points behind bitter-rivals Galatasaray.
