Both Hungary and Switzerland kick-off their Euro 2024 campaigns when they go up against each other in Group A at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne on Saturday afternoon.
The duo have been housed in Group A alongside Germany and Scotland, who will get this summer’s spectacular underway in Munich tonight.
Hungary failed to get out of what was an extremely difficult group at Euro 2020, while the Swiss exceeded expectations by reaching the quarter-final stages in the last edition of the Euros.
Based on the pair’s respective performances during qualifying, Hungary look overpriced to claim top honours in Cologne, though I’m instead going to opt for a player-based selection that looks well worth supporting.
Hungary striker Barnabas Varga has been priced up at 5/6 on Bet 365 to have at least one shot on target during this clash and those odds look too big to turn down.
While Dominik Szoboszlai is undoubtedly the poster boy of Hungarian football, the aforementioned Varga was a key cog in Hungary’s impressive qualifying showing.
The Ferencvaros forward fired in four goals during their qualifiers, not to mention he made the net bulge twice in the Magyars’ final pre Euro 2024 warm-up match against Israel.
It’s also worth noting that Varga banged in 29 goals across the most recent domestic season, averaging 1.89 shots on target per-game, so he should arrive in Germany brimming with confidence.
While Switzerland have plenty of major tournament pedigree, their unconvincing performances during qualifying suggest that they may struggle to replicate their 2020 exploits.
Murat Yakin’s men triumphed in just four of their 10 qualifiers, failing to keep a clean sheet in seven of their final eight Group I assignments.
So with that in mind, backing Varga to have at least one on-target effort against the Swiss on Saturday afternoon stands out at 5/6 on Bet 365.
