Argentina will look to continue their pursuit of retaining their World Cup crown as they take on record African champions Egypt in Atlanta on Tuesday night.
After breezing through Group J with a 100% record, Argentina had to survive a mighty scare against debutants Cape Verde in the Round of 32, with La Albiceleste being pegged back twice before eventually prevailing in extra time.
After finishing second in Group G behind winners Belgium on goal difference, Egypt had to navigate past Australia in the Round of 32 in what was a nervy encounter, eventually progressing on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Argentina To Qualify
As alluded to, Argentina survived a mighty scare against Cape Verde in the last round, eventually prevailing in extra time after previously being pegged back twice.
That should wake the reigning champions up – especially after being largely untroubled in the group stages – and should progress against an Egypt side that have won just once on route to this stage of the tournament against New Zealand, drawing with the likes of Iran and Australia.
Lionel Messi to Score Anytime
Despite just turning 39 years old, Lionel Messi continues to provide more magic for Argentina, scoring six goals in the group stages, including a hat-trick against Algeria in their group opener.
The Inter Miami maestro then opened the scoring with a trademark touch and finish in the previous round against Cape Verde – and he will fancy his chances of scoring for a ninth consecutive match at the World Cup finals against an Egypt backline that has yet to record a clean sheet in North America this summer.
