A huge few days lie ahead for Rangers which will shape the rest of their season.
First up is a money-spinning tie with PSV Eindhoven tonight for a place in the Champions League then on Sunday they welcome Celtic to Ibrox and the chance to lay down a marker in this season’s title chase.
In between is the closing of the summer transfer window but any further additions to Michael Beale’s squad might be dependent on the outcome in Eindhoven tonight.
Michael Beale’s men carved out a 2-2 draw last week despite the Dutchmen having the lion’s share of the match at Ibrox. Coincidentally that was the same scoreline when the sides met at the same stage last season. Rangers would subsequently win the return leg 1-0 at the Phillips Stadion to book their place in the group stages and the odds of history repeating itself tonight are 18/1.
PSV are clear favourites to go through this time around at 1/4 which seems staggering short. That means there could be a bit of value in the 11/4 on the Gers to prevail in the Netherlands for the second successive year.
PSV might’ve impressed in possession last week but Rangers’ more direct approach proved just as effective and if the Eredivise side are as profligate in front of goals this evening they’ll come unstuck again.
A win on the night is priced at 5/1 but Rangers won’t care if it takes 90, 120 or penalties to progress. Such a big price means we can also get a very decent 11/8 in the Double Chance market, backing Rangers not to lose.

A poor day at the US open again yesterday with some frustrating results but at least the NAP and NB landed again to reduce the loses. Still in profit this month but it’s not been the ideal start to the last slam of the year. Still plenty of time to turn it around.

Danielle Collins -3.5 Games v Mertens @ 1.91 Bet365 (NAP)
I think this is a great match up for Collins. Mertens lacks any real weapons & doesn’t have the power to try and move Collins around the court. Collins was excellent in her 1st round win whereas Mertens should have lost to Bjorklund who missed 3 match points in a row in the 3rd. With the considerable power advantage that Collins has in this she will be able to bully Mertens around the court & dictate most of the play. She has the better serve and as long as she plays close to her level in the 1st round this should be another straightforward win. Head to head is 3-1 to Collins with the most recent win coming at the start of the season 7-6 6-4. In better form now I expect an easier win this time around.
M Fucsovics -5.5 Games v R Hijikata @ 2.03 Pinnacle
I struggle to see what Hijikata has to hurt Fucsovics in this one. I know Fucsovics can often make things difficult for himself but he really should be winning this match comfortably enough. He can have lapses in matches but even in 4 sets this should land. At the grand slams in 2023 Hijikata has lost in qualifying at Wimbledon 7-6 7-6 to the clay courter Barrios Vera, 6-3 6-2 to Tirante at the French & 6-3 6-0 6-2 to Tsitsipas at the Aussie Open. In that match he was broken 6 times & Tsitsipas doesn’t have the best return game. No previous head to head to look at but Hijikata has lost easily in recent weeks to the likes of Coric, Lajovic & Walton who is ranked 195. Hijikata can be consistent but he will severely struggle to hit through the good defense of Fucsovics.
J Ostapenko -5 Games v E Avanesyan @ 2.02 Pinnacle
Always a risk when trying to predict matches involving Ostapenko as you don’t really know what version of her will turn up on the day. However, assuming she is not spraying errors galore she should have far too much power for Avanesyan on a hard court. Avanesyan has only won 1 match on the main tour level on hard which was her previous round win in 3 sets over Cornet. She is most vulnerable on this surface as she lacks power & has a relatively weak serve. I feel there is every chance that Ostapenko can win a set easily here. So even if it did go to 3 sets like her previous round win against Paolini (won by 7 games) she could still cover this line. I do expect Ostapenko to be in the mix on a lot of the Avanesyan service games.
K Muchova v M Frech Under 18.5 Games @ 1.96 Pinnacle
Muchova should be winning this match in straight sets & just really a matter of how easily she manages it. Frech just doesn’t have any tools that should cause any issues. Muchova has the better serve & will dictate most baseline exchanges. Only the 1 previous head to head match which Muchova won towards the end of 2022 on indoor hard 6-2 6-2. In that match she broke 4 times & won 72% of service points. Muchova has been very good on hard courts this year & her consistency should be too much for Frech.

North of Scotland cup tie here, and it’s a competition Brora take seriously having won it 6 times in the last 10 years. Fort William were the highland league whipping boys before being removed from the league and anything other than a bottom finish was a shock.
They now play in the North Caledonian league and currently sit top after 2 games but Brora should be too strong here being a team that regularly sit around the top of the highland league and it’s a case of how many . With a 3 hour journey to make for a midweek game up north, I don’t fancy Fort William keeping the ball out the net at all.
Will have something for the rangers game once I see the line ups, it’s cards I fancy strongly for it with a ref who’s happy to dish them out, and wouldn’t look past a red in the game either.
