The Scottish League Cup group stage usually throws up a few shocks and we saw three at the weekend as Dundee United, St Mirren and St Johnstone all crashed to defeats against minnows.
Starting the competition in early July levels the playing field a bit and it will be interesting to see how United react to their 1-0 loss against SPFL new boys Spartans.
Jim Goodwin needed to start the new campaign well after relegation from the Premiership but instead suffered further embarrassment.
Fans are already furious so it’s important Goodwin’s side bounce back straight away at home to Partick Thistle tonight.
I’m surprised to see the Jags as big as 19/10 (William Hill) for a win at Tannadice but they were also pretty poor in their opener, edging past Peterhead on penalties.
With neither side full of confidence, I fancy under 2.5 goals and that pays 11/8 at Betfair.
Spartans will be flying heading into their clash with Falkirk but Coral makes them 9/2 outsiders for another home win.
The half-time draw could be worth a look at 6/4 (Bet365) as this is League One Falkirk’s first competitive outing.
New Dundee boss Tony Docherty is also taking charge of his first competitive game as the Dark Blues head to Bonnyrigg Rose.
Derek McInnes’ long-time assistant is stepping out of his shadow and friendly results have been impressive so far.
Dundee have won five in a row during pre-season, keeping clean sheets in their last two outings. So I’m on a win to nil for the Dark Blues at 8/5 (BetVictor).
Motherwell avoided a slip in their group opener with a 2-0 win at Elgin and look in good shape under Stuart Kettlewell.
League One Queen of the South should give them a stiffer test at Palmerston tonight but I still fancy Well to be winning at half-time and full-time (8/5, BoyleSports).
