The competition includes 16 Premier League Academy teams (Under 21s) with six of those in action this evening and a feature of the tournament is that all Academies play their matches away from home. This might account for the fact that no Academy side has made it beyond the quarter-final stages in the last five years, in fact only three times have an U21 side featured in the last eight.
Leicester City's youths have managed that twice so they could be worth keeping an eye out for tonight at Accrington, however they did lose their first match of the competition 4-1 at Fleetwood.
The 2020 winners, Salford City (remember the final was played this year just 24 hours before the 2021 final?) host last season's runners-up Tranmere Rovers at the Peninsula Stadium and it's one of our featured matches below.
As is the current holders, Sunderland's visit to Lincoln City. The Black Cats have yet to play in the tournament this season but it's a competition they obviously take seriously having won it last season and being beaten finalists in 2019.
On a night where it's going to be really difficult to decipher the team news it might be worth checking out Skybet's specials for an interest bet. They're not giving anything away with their total goals market where it's 5/4 on 36 goals across 12 games, so we'd need on average three goals per match.
A goal in of the selected 12 matches looks more realistic but it pays just 8/13 on the Skybet special so it might be better to shop around for that one. Alternatively, for long-shot backers, conside all six Academy teams to lose, which pays a healthy 22/1 at Bet365.
