There was no disgrace in defeat to France on Thursday for the Republic of Ireland squad but they’ve a mountain to climb if they’re to make in to Germany next summer.
Mathematically they can still qualify, they’re 16/1 shots to do so, but nothing other than a win over the Netherlands tonight will do.
The Dutch warmed up for tonight’s clash with a routine 3-0 win over Greece which they had sewn up by half-time and will not expect to tie up second place in the group.
The Irish are always capable of pulling a result out of the bag in Dublin but it’s been a tough shift for the fans lately who have seen their team win just 10 of 35 matches since the turn of the decade – all coming against teams currently ranked 89th or below, with the exception of Qatar (59th) in a friendly and Scotland whom they beat 3-0 last summer.
It’s not a vintage Dutch squad but they should have enough quality to leave the Emerald Isle with all three points tonight.
Finland might be two points clear at the top of Group H but Denmark should show their class in Helsinki tonight to reach the summit of what is a weak-looking group.
The Danes threw away a two goal lead in Kazakhstan, conceding three in the last 15 minutes to drop all three points earlier in the group and only managed a draw in Slovenia which means that taking something from the Olympic Stadium is crucial.
Rasmus Højlund netted a hat-trick when the two nations met back in March and the Manchester United, who has now scored six in seven appearances for his country, will be the man to watch tonight. He’s 11/8 to bag another.
The Danish squad boasts plenty of quality and experience. With the chance to go top they should get the job done in the Finnish capital.
