Rosenborg host Manchester United at Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim on Friday with kick-off at 5pm local time, as United continue their preseason schedule six days after Michael Carrick's first game as permanent manager.
It was an afternoon to forget in Helsinki, where Wrexham claimed a deserved 1-0 victory after Sam Smith's first-half goal exposed defensive hesitation and capped an uncomfortable opening outing for Carrick's new-look side.
Despite the defeat, United fielded something close to a first-choice XI during the opening half. New £48 million signing Andrey Santos made his debut following his move from Chelsea and impressed with his energy, defensive work and ability to carry the ball through midfield. The biggest issue came further forward, where United struggled to create clear-cut chances against an organised Wrexham defence that repeatedly disrupted their attacking rhythm.
Rosenborg arrive in a very different position. Norway's most successful club, with 26 league titles, have endured a disappointing domestic campaign and currently sit 10th in the Eliteserien after 13 matches. Four wins, three draws and six defeats leave them below expectations, although successive league victories suggest performances are beginning to improve.
Their underlying numbers offer more encouragement than the table. Rosenborg's xPTS total would place them eighth rather than 10th, while four clean sheets rank among the better defensive records in the division.
The bigger problem has been at the other end of the pitch. They average just 3.8 shots on target per game, have converted only 9.8% of their chances and rank near the bottom of the league for big chances created. Defensive organisation has kept them competitive, but a lack of attacking quality continues to hold them back.
United remain without Benjamin Sesko and Matthijs de Ligt through injury, while several players are still absent following the World Cup. Carrick rotated two entirely different XIs against Wrexham and is expected to follow a similar approach here, balancing senior players with academy prospects as fitness continues to build.
For Rosenborg, this represents an opportunity to test themselves against elite opposition. Zlatko Tripic remains their main creative outlet, while Noah Holm provides the greatest goal threat after scoring the winner when these sides last met. Regardless of the result, facing Premier League opposition offers a useful benchmark for a squad looking to climb the Eliteserien table during the second half of the season.
How the bookies view it
At the time of writing there are no odds available for this fixture.
Head to head: Rosenborg hold the upper hand in only previous meeting
These clubs have met only once before. Rosenborg recorded a 1-0 victory at Lerkendal Stadion in July 2024, with Noah Holm scoring the winner in stoppage time in front of more than 20,000 supporters.
While that gives the Norwegian side a perfect record in the fixture, it carries limited significance given the changes both squads have undergone since then.
Player to watch: Bryan Mbeumo hoping for better season
Bryan Mbeumo will be hoping to make a bigger impact after United struggled in the final third against Wrexham. He finished last season with 11 goals and three assists from 33 appearances, producing 73 shots and 32 efforts on target.
With Carrick searching for greater fluency in attack, this fixture provides another opportunity for Mbeumo to develop his understanding with United's new-look forward line against a Rosenborg defence that has been one of the stronger units in Norway this season.
Predicted line-ups
Rosenborg (4-3-3): Pryts; Reitan, Norheim, Husebo, Toure; Mvoue, Segberg, Ugland; Strannegard, Lorentzen, Cornelius.
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Heaton; Yoro, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Mount, Santos; Mbeumo, J. Fletcher, Dorgu; Zirkzee.
Anything else catch the eye?
My bet is under 2.5 goals, with the price to be confirmed once the market is available.
United's defeat to Wrexham will inevitably attract attention, but preseason results rarely tell the full story. Carrick is still assessing his squad, building fitness and experimenting with combinations, making another heavily rotated performance highly likely.
Rosenborg's underlying numbers also point towards a low-scoring contest. Their defensive record has been respectable throughout the Eliteserien campaign, but they continue to struggle in the final third, ranking near the bottom of the division for shots on target, big chances created and conversion rate. They simply do not profile as a side likely to turn this into an open game.
With United still searching for attacking cohesion and Rosenborg relying on defensive organisation more than attacking quality, chances could be limited. The tactical battle will provide far more insight than the result itself, and under 2.5 goals looks the strongest angle heading into the match.
