City responded to their European setback with a domestic victory over Ipswich, while AEK arrive in Manchester following a 3-1 defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The hosts have scored four goals across their opening two Champions League matches, generating 4.88 xG, 47 shots and 12 big chances. Their attacking performances have been encouraging, although defensive mistakes proved costly against the reigning European champions.

City were three goals behind at half-time against PSG after Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha exposed their defensive weaknesses. Maresca responded with three substitutions at the interval, and City produced a much-improved second-half performance. Erling Haaland scored twice, while Ferran Torres missed a late penalty, but PSG eventually secured a 4-2 victory.

City's defensive record requires attention. They have conceded four goals in two Champions League fixtures, although their average of 1.02 xGA suggests opponents have been particularly clinical.

AEK Athens opened their European campaign with a 1-0 victory against LASK before suffering defeat against Shakhtar.

Lovro Majer gave the Greek champions the lead after 28 minutes, finishing a move created by Stavros Pilios. However, Pedrinho equalised from the penalty spot before Vinicius Tobias and Gleiker Mendoza scored twice in the closing stages.

AEK have averaged 1.34 xG, 15.5 shots and 3.5 big chances across their opening two matches. Their attacking output suggests they are capable of creating opportunities, although converting those chances against stronger opposition remains a challenge.

The visitors' wider European record is encouraging. Defeat against Shakhtar was only their fourth in 21 continental fixtures, and they had previously kept three consecutive clean sheets. However, AEK have never won away from home in the Champions League proper, drawing five and losing 11 of their previous 16 fixtures.

Head to head: First meeting

This will be the first competitive meeting between Manchester City and AEK Athens.

Player to watch: Rayan Cherki to show his quality

With Erling Haaland expected to be rested, Rayan Cherki could have an important role to play as Manchester City look to return to winning ways in the Champions League.

The French attacking midfielder has enjoyed an impressive start to the season, scoring four goals from just 1.30 xG across 395 minutes. His finishing has been particularly effective, with five of his 14 shots hitting the target and an xGOT of 2.90 highlighting the quality of his attempts.

Cherki has also been influential creatively, providing two assists from 1.70 xA. He has created 14 chances, including three big chances, while completing 42 line-breaking passes and maintaining an excellent passing accuracy of 91.6%.

His movement into attacking areas has been another feature of his performances, registering 30 touches inside the opposition penalty area despite playing fewer than five full matches. Cherki endured a difficult first half against Paris Saint-Germain and was replaced at the interval, but the visit of AEK Athens presents an opportunity to make a greater impact.

City are averaging 2.44 xG and six big chances per Champions League fixture, while AEK conceded three times against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Predicted lineups

Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Khusanov, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol; Anderson, Bouaddi, Fernandez; Cherki, Doku; Foden.

AEK Athens: Star AEK Athens (4-4-2): Brignoli; Rota, Moukoudi, Relvas, Pilios; Majer, Vitalis, Marin, Koita; Jovic, Zine.

Anything else catch the eye

Manchester City to win and Over 3.5 match goals at 4/5 is the selection.

City's attacking statistics provide the strongest argument. They have averaged 2.44 xG per Champions League match, with their performances suggesting they are capable of scoring considerably more than twice against weaker opposition.

AEK's historical record in England is another significant factor. Conceding an average of three goals per visit, alongside their failure to win any of their previous 16 Champions League away fixtures, highlights the challenge facing the visitors.

The Greek champions' defeat against Shakhtar also exposed defensive vulnerabilities, particularly during the closing stages when they conceded twice.

City's own defensive problems could contribute to the goals total. PSG scored four at the Etihad, although Maresca's side have generally restricted opponents to fewer clear-cut opportunities than that result suggests.

There is a legitimate concern surrounding AEK's recent European defensive performances. They had recorded three consecutive clean sheets before facing Shakhtar, suggesting their historical results may not fully reflect their current capabilities.

Nevertheless, City's attacking superiority and the visitors' difficult away record make a high-scoring home victory a reasonable expectation.
