Hibernian vs St Mirren

, KO: 19:45 Sep 27, 2023, Easter Road
St Mirren

HIBS and St Mirren clash in what is an intriguing Viaplay Cup quarter final clash on Wednesday in the capital.

The hosts appear to have turned the corner under new boss Nick Montgomery. He's undefeated after a couple of games and got the job done on Saturday on his home debut against St Johnstone.

Of course, he's working with predecessor Lee Johnson's players so miracles are not expected, but so far the former Central Coast Mariners boss has talked a good game and backed that up on the pitch.

But this will be his toughest test yet against the Premiership shock troops St Mirren.

The Paisley side proudly sit in second place and in the table and deservedly so after a great start to the season under Stephen Robinson.

The Buddies are adept at soaking up pressure and taking their chances. They are sharp on the counter-attack and look set to be on for their best season in the top flight since the days of Alex Ferguson before he was sacked by the club in 1978.

There is a real incentive for all clubs this season with Celtic out and Rangers seemingly a long way from the force they were so there could be silverware up for grabs and a place in the semi would be a great boost to either club.

How the bookies view it

Home advantage presumably has swayed the layers to make Hibs warm favourites here at 6/5 with bet365.

St Mirren can be backed at at 9/4 with Boylesports. A draw is 12/5 with William Hill.

Recent head to heads

St Mirren have already gone to Easter Road this season and won 3-2 at the start of the season although that was under the previous management for the hosts.

Hibs did win three out of the last four games last term against the Saints.

Players to watch

Dutch hitman Dylan Vente cost Hibs a decent amount of £700,000 in their transfer fee and he's started well with four goals in his first nine games for the hosts, including one at the weekend. He is 15/8 to score anytime with bet365.

St Mirren striker Toyosi Olusanya has maybe not been prolific, but he's a handful and has already scored against Hibs this season. He is 21/10 to score anytime with bet365.

Anything else catch the eye?

It's very hard to see why Hibs are as short as this against a very good St Mirren side who are who are seven points ahead of them after just six games.

Yes, Hibs have improved under Montgomery but that's not saying much and the call at the prices has to be an away win for St Mirren.

The Saints are really well organised defensively too and Hibs will have to work very hard to break them down.

Back the Buddies to be strong defensively – Hibs to score under 1.5 goals is a solid 3/4 with Boylesports.
