Bristol City vs Southampton

, KO: 20:00 Feb 13, 2024, Ashton Gate Stadium
Southampton

Southampton travel to Bristol City for a Championship fixture on Tuesday as they look to maintain their recent good form. The Saints have become almost unstoppable in recent times and should be too strong for an out of sorts Bristol team.

Bristol City are coming off a 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough in their previous Championship fixture. They raced to a two goal lead early in the first half through Jason Knight and Matty James and held on for the win despite Boro pulling one back late in the second half.

That was a vital result for Bristol City, who had been winless in their previous five matches. Liam Manning’s men are currently in the bottom half of the table but closer to the promotion playoff places than the relegation zone.

One of the major problems for Bristol City is that they have failed to make it count at Ashton Gate. They have picked up just one win in their last five home matches across all competitions and were beaten 1-0 by Leeds United in their previous fixture in front of their fans.

Winning has become a habit for Southampton, whose last defeat across all competitions came in September. They are fully in the mix for automatic promotion, sitting second on the table, one point above third place Leeds United.

Southampton were in fine fettle last time out in the Championship as they picked up a 5-3 victory over Huddersfield Town. They fought back from two goals down with Joe Rothwell netting a brace while Sekou Mara and Samuel Edozie were also on target.

While manager Russell Martin will be pleased with the result, he is likely to find the defending troubling as they conceded three goals at home. Southampton have also kept just two clean sheets in their last eight away matches across all competitions.

How the bookies view it

Southampton have been installed as overwhelming favourites and are priced at 3/4 by Unibet to claim the victory. Bristol City are considered outsiders among the bookies with a home valued at 4/1 by Betfred while a draw is set at odds of 14/5 by 10bet.

Head to head

Bristol City and Southampton have claimed six wins each with one draw from 13 previous matches. However, the Saints have won the last two meetings and claimed a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in November.

Players to watch

Tommy Conway has caught the eye for Bristol City this season and is their leading scorer with six Championship goals. The forward is priced at 7/2 by bet365 to get on the score sheet on Tuesday.

Adam Armstrong will be the one to watch for Southampton as he looks to add to his 15 Championship goals this season. The forward has also found the net in two of the last three away matches and is priced at 13/8 by Paddy Power to maintain his scoring run.

Anything else catch the eye?

Southampton saw over 3.5 goals in their previous fixture and a repeat is priced at 5/2 with Unibet. Over 2.5 goals is valued at 10/11 by Paddy Power while Unibet is offering odds of 17/20 on both teams to score.

Given Southampton’s prolific attack, they could be backed to score in both halves at 7/4 with BoyleSports.
