AFTER several near misses I landed a nice double on Tuesday thanks to Mo Salah's consolation goal for Egypt against Russia.
My 4-1 btts double on Poland v Senegal and Russia v Egypt was kept alive by a late Pole goal – unfortunately not from Super Single pick Robert Lewandowski – and the Salah's penalty.
All three matches brought up btts and although two outsiders won there were plenty of winners on the site – too many to mention but well done to you all including those backing penalties and there were another two on Tuesday with the help of Mr VAR.
Wednesday's games see three big favourites – Spain, Portugal and Uruguay – in action and I'm backing them all to win.
I've posted a preview of all three games and there are separate previews from some of the site contributors so check them out.

    Hoping for more pens today.
Salah was dreadful last night bless him not the same player when he’s surrounded by poor players not in the same class as Ronaldo Messi etc I think that’s the end of that debate.

    • aarron19888 3 months ago

@acsafc – this probably shows why you are not a paid football pundit, he was clearly recovering from an injury.. literally, everyone said it. Did Neymar do much? no, and bless him he’s one of the best and also, funnily enough also recovering from an injury…

      • mr h 3 months ago

Not that there’s much of a debate but he is right in what he says with regards too Messi & Ronaldo….hes nowhere near them and never will be. Plus he was dreadful albeit recovering from an injury which you’re correct on but he’s not as effective for Egypt as he is Liverpool due too who his team mates are.

PS – If Ally McCoist can get a pundit/commentary gig there’s hope for us all. Fed up listening too that fool….hes the Neville brothers long lost Scottish brother

      • acsafc 3 months ago

        Thanks Mr H totally agree.

    • maccathered 3 months ago

Don’t ever think there was anything to debate,Salah was up there with them last season no doubt about it,international football is totally different, was Messi brilliant in Argentina’s first game??? don’t here you slating him, doesn’t Ronaldo and Messi get the service from multi million pound players just the same as Salah at their respective clubs,i don’t see many big players in the Egypt camp so where your coming from i will never know just more stupid comments.

      • mr h 3 months ago

Macca, stupid comments? I’m not saying Salah ain’t a quality player as that’s just silly but form is temporary, class is permanent so let’s see how long it goes on for. Ronaldo and Messi have been producing it for years now week in and week out. Perhaps 2 of the most consistent performers of their generation or any generation for that matter. Salah has in truth had one great season at club level and in no way does that earn him the right too be classed in the same bracket as the aforementioned GOAT’s so no debate as you say.

With regards too the International performances as opposed too the club performances. Ronaldo and Messi are the same as Salah in that their club records are better as they play with better players at their clubs and of the 3 Ronaldo is the stand out international performer

        • jimba 3 months ago

I thought Salah did OK, Superb penalty & Johnb was right about Russia arguably best team so far in the tournament.

        • maccathered 3 months ago

I’m not wooden Mr h,.I totally agree that you can’t class Salah in the same bracket as Messi or Ronaldo,i don’t think any Liverpool fan did to be honest,he was up there with them on goal scoring terms last season and he needs to do it season in season out to be even considered in that bracket.Do i think he will be the same next season i bloody hope so.Stupid comment wasn’t aimed at yourself Mr H it was the other lad.acsacfc whatever his name is.

          • mr h 3 months ago

I hope he does it again too, he was superb viewing last year. Still see a man short at centreback too partner VVD and a quality central midfielder should be a priority too. Can match City over 90mins as was proved, just need more consistency too bridge the gap a bit. Good team to watch

2 out of 3 on the pens yesterday, running total since I started on Spain v Portugal is 9 pens in 14 games.

    Bookies further tightening their grip on the penalty markets, but Paddy Power still holding 2/1 which are the best odds;

    Portugal v Morocco
    Penalty in match
    2/1 (PP)

    Uruguay v Saudi Arabia
    Penalty in match
    2/1 (PP)

    Iran v Spain
    Penalty in match
    2/1 (PP)

  8. Johnb 3 months ago

Keep hearing people say on Twitter & Facebook that VAR is the reason why we could see a record number of penalties at this World Cup but the truth is that even if VAR hadn’t been at this World Cup we would still be well on track for a record number of pens.

So far at the World Cup three penalties have been awarded by VAR although I am pretty confident that if VAR hadn’t been at this World Cup then one of those three would have been given and the ref only played on because he knew he had VAR to fall back on, the penalty I am talking about was the Sweden penalty v South Korea, the other two that have been awarded by VAR were the France penalty v Australia and the Egypt penalty v Russia after the free kick was changed to a penalty.

In total so far there has been 10 penalties meaning 7 have been awarded without the use of VAR and none have been overturned

    Russia 2018 with VAR
10 pens from 17 games is a pen in 58.82% of games
2 of 10 have been missed

    Russia 2018 without VAR
7 pens from 17 games is a pen in 41.18% of games

Stats Since moving to 32 teams & 64 games in 1998

    France 1998
    10 pens, 64 games = 15.63%
    No pens were missed

    Japan/Korea 2002
    18 pens, 64 games = 28.13%
    5 of 18 were missed

    Germany 2006
    17 pens, 64 games = 26.56%
    4 of 17 were missed

    South Africa 2010
    15 pens, 64 games = 23.44%
    6 of 15 were missed

    Brazil 2014
    13 pens, 64 games = 20.31%
    1 of 13 were missed

There is a reason out there why more have been awarded so far but who knows what the reason is, is it VAR or is it the way teams play
People get too carried away with the VAR opinion because it’s easy and lazy to think that and not explore more options

You have to remember that yes VAR can give a penalty when the referee doesn’t but you also have to remember that VAR can just as easily take a penalty away after the referee has given one

    • cockerspaniel 3 months ago

Well said Johnb – and interesting stats.

    • acsafc 3 months ago

Yes but hw many penalties have been given so far that have been over turned after VAR? I don’t think any have been. It plays into our hands as gamblers but the odds aren’t great

  9. elander 3 months ago

Posted this up last night – stuck on a fecking train so any updates gladly received ?

Not around tomorrow – 4am start to the wonderful West Midlands and back around 10pm so will post this up now:

    IRAN VS. SPAIN (1900 KO):

Spain may have only come out of that Iberian based thriller with a point but they were good…only 1 man made it difficult and unfortunately for Iran, they don’t have a Ronaldo in their team.

Only one outcome here for me and with the Spanish side rightly odds-on, it’s a case of looking for value in alternative markets.

I like this one a lot and though we only saw glimpses of Isco’s talent, last week, he is potentially going to be one of THE top players in world football over the next 5 years:
