Congratulations ITALY!

It felt almost inevitable that the final of a brilliant tournament would go all the way, and like so many years before that mean heartache for England, but scenes of joy for the Azzurri who won the trophy on penalties.

The two sides couldn't be separated after 120 mins whch meant the destination of the trophy had to be decided from the spot, a 4/1 shot which was flagged up alongside the Draw after 90 minutes on yesterday's thread.

Pre-tournament the Italians were 7/1 shots to be crowned European Champions so congratulations to those of you backed from from the outset.

Few would've backed Italian ‘Keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to be named Player of the Tournament. The stopper was instrumental in Roberto Mancini's sides shot-out wins on the way to the gold medal.

18-year-old Pedri was chosen as Young Player of the Tournament for his role in helping Spain to the semi-finals and tournament top scorers.

Top Goalscorer was shared by Patrick Shick of Czech Republic and Cristiano Ronaldo who both finished on five goals apiece.

England fans and pundits are already turnign their attention to next year's World Cup in Qatar, which will be a very different proposition for all nations involved. Gareth Southgate's side have been shortened to 17/2 with Paddy Power, but can still be backed at 10/1 with William Hill.

New European Champions, Italy are as big as 16/1 with Bet365. Joint favourites are France at 6/1 alongside Brazil, who lost out Argentina in the Copa America final in the early hours of Sunday morning. Lionel Messi and co and 12/1 for success in Qatar.

Monday is a quiet one on the football front, so time to regroup and prepare for the midweek matches in the PRemier Sports Cup in Scotland and round of qualifiers in the Champions League and Europa Conference League.

I think when you look at the tournament as a whole, England did a great job to get to the final and carried themselves with dignity throughout…

Of course, all true England fans would have loved for the team to prevail last night, but was not to be…there will be other tournaments and this young team can only get better. I think England fans have a lot to look forward to…

The biggest disappointment for me was not the three missed penalties, but yet again, the racist bigots having a field day on social media. Gareth Southgate and the team have persisted with taking the knee and as is clear now, with very good reason (IMHO)…

Unbeaten in the tournament and a progression from the last world cup, positives can be taken. Totally agree with you Kf, what’s a matter with these ar$eholes.

I think a lot of the bigotry is down to low self-esteem and envy, which is not to excuse any of it. There is no place for these types of attitude in a modern, inclusive, multiracial society. I think as many as possible should be prosecuted and fined. If they haven’t the means to pay the fine, they should be made to carry out community service or jailed. Unfortunately there will always be a ‘lowest common denominator’ in society, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be trying to continue to change things (hopefully then their children at least will not grow up into bigoted racists).

Congrats to Italy – best team won it but no shame for the English side! Got the Nap and close with the Longshot:

    90 MINUTE RESULT = DRAW
    (2/1, unibet) NAP ⭐⭐⭐ ✅

HARRY MAGUIRE 1+ HEADERS ON TARGET
    (7/2, paddypower) NB ⭐⭐ 👎

ENGLAND TO WIN IN EXTRA TIME
    (10/1, bet365) LONGSHOT ⭐ 👎

Pleased it’s over now and it wasn’t a success on the betting front but then tournaments rarely are – back to normality and I can’t think of a better place to start…

    KR VS. KEFLAVÍK (8.15pm)

KR start heavy favourites but I wouldn’t write off Keflavik who have become a much stronger side in recent years.

Add in the fact that KR’s form is good BUT they haven’t been taking on the big boys whereas Keflavik have secured results against the likes of Stjarnan and Briedablik recently!

    I fancy the following:

    KEFLAVIK +2 H/CAP
    (8/13, bet365) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE 2ND HALF
    (6/4, bet365) NB ⭐⭐

    KEFLAVIK WIN
    (9/2, bet365) LONGSHOT ⭐

    Best of luck!

Bellingham 18; Saka 19; Sancho, James and Foden 21; Rice and Mount 22; Rashford 23; Chilwell and DCL 24; Grealish, Phillips still only 25; Shaw 26 today, Sterling. Plus Greenwood 19, TA-A 22 etc. Plenty of young talent
    Exciting times ahead

Same can be said of other sides like Spain, Germany and France so it will be difficult for England to improve on their results. The heat in Qatar for the World Cup will favour the South American sides.

Think in actual fact Gareth Southgate got found out last night much as I like the guy for his respect tactically England couldn’t live with Italy… 65% possession .. 19 shots to England’s 6 .. and well documented in the press today he picked the penalty takers who were psychologically all over the place …. Italy had more heart and belief in themselves…

    • boabee8867 3 years ago

I think Italy won because they were the better team .

    • elvis parsley 3 years ago

It was the same as Croatia in the last world cup, go one up then sat back and seem paralysed as the opposition began to dominate and didn’t or couldn’t do anything about it.

Apart from the goal I can’t remember a save by donnaruna.
Kane obviously dropped deep to avoid confrontation with ciellini and bonucci and had no influence in the Italians penalty box leaving those 2 to have the night off.

England have the players and resources to win the world cup but need to back their ability especially going forward when it matters and not go into their shell, you cant shut up shop for 88 minutes against top sides.

As for the penalties Southgate has basically taken the rap for choosing the 5 takers which is very honourable and a measure of the man but I don’t think so.
Sacko has only taken 2 in his playing career and none as a full time pro, and it’s a tragedy for him to be seen as the villain of the piece.
Sterling as a senior player and in scoring form should have been man enough to insist on taking while young sacko kops the flack.

As for the racist abuse the 3 players got, the gutless cowards who say these things are scum, end of…..

For boabee not rocket science to see the England players could not keep up with the intensity of the Italian players and actually admitting to picking the penalty takers who weren’t involved much in the game as they were substitutes showed he tactically got it wrong … give him his due he held up his hand to it … probably to protect his young players … it’s undeniable they were second best to Italy .

Lots of debate around England – for me we had a decent tournament but it’s just a shame Southgate couldn’t let the hand brakes off play a back four against Italy play 1 more attacking player and just let them have a go , too many quality attacking players left to waste on the bench for me , Italy were there for the taking , as Elvis said just go back your ability , as usual we just reverted to type sat back and let the inevitable happen , still Southgate did a decent job and as a few have said there’s loads of quality young players in that squad and if there allowed to just go out and play ( doubtful ) we should have a decent go at the world Cup.
