worldcuptrophy

WE tagged Group D the Group of Death pre-tournament and that was without taking into account Costa Rica could live with the big guns.

It was supposed to be two going through from Italy, England and Uruguay but at the moment it's Italy and Costa Rica in the driving seat after opening wins.

England played well in losing 2-1 to Italy but it will be interesting to see how young guns such as Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson react to a do-or-die situation against Uruguay tonight.

It will be the most pressure they've faced but the South Americans are in the same boat having being stunned 3-1 by Costa Rica.

They badly missed Luis Suarez and he is expected to start tonight but if he was anywhere near fully fit he'd have been sent on in a bid to save the day last Saturday.

England are a biggest 6-5 with McBookie, BetVictor, Ladbrokes and others to pick up the points while the draw is 5-2 and Uruguay are out to 13-5 at McBookie.

Not to lose you can have England at a skinny 1-3 with Coral while Uruguay are 4-6 at Betfred on the double chance.

Sturridge hit England's goal against Italy but Sterling was the star man and went close on a couple of occasions. He looks value at 12-1 with Ladbrokes to hit the opener while Sturridge is 6-1 and under-fire Wayne Rooney 13-2 (BetVictor).

Roy Hodgson seems set to name an unchanged team but with Rooney playing a more central role behind Sturridge to give the side better balance.

Suarez will be keen to rub it in against several Liverpool team-mates and is 6-1 at BetVictor and bet365 to break the deadlock and 2-1 at bet365 to net at any time.

While a draw won't eliminate either side I can't see either playing for it as it would put Italy and Costa Rica in great positions if they then grab a point apiece tomorrow.

England showed their attacking instincts against Italy and Hodgson is likely to stick with the tactics that earned praise even in defeat.

Uruguay have Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan but looked suspect at the back against Costa Rica so there should be goals. Both teams to score is 17-20 at McBookie and BetVictor.

So mainly on the evidence of last weekend's openers I'm on England and if they win I expect them to beat Costa Rica and qualify for the last 16.

Ladbrokes have a special on who will swap shirts with Suarez after the game (bets void if he doesn't swap shirts) and his pal and England skipper Steven Gerrard is 1-1 favourite ahead of Glen Johnson 3-1, Sturridge 4-1, Henderson 8-1, Sterling 8-1, new Reds team-mate Rickie Lambert 16-1 and Rooney 20-1. Others on request

I took England to beat Uruguay after the last round of the games and the only worry to that us Suarez. Cabana was lazy up front and although Lugar is a decent defender pace is severely lacking and England’s front three should take advantage of that. Looking forward to it. Btts looks solid

Damo-I would not worry too much about Suarez, as Mr F says he is not fit. I think Uruguay will raise their game and this game is likely to get dirty.

@Youngy, its not always the case that we Scots want England to fail, its the smugness of the commentators we hate.”England will reach the semi’s”,,,,,”England are great this year”,,,,,, “ENGLAND 66″………..We are sick to death of it……Could you imagine the next 50years if England win the world cup again?? So this is why, we Scots want England NOT to win, we just DONT WANT TO HEAR IT AGAIN —-FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!

    • Avatar of Paul C

Yep, the arrogance and irritating commentators get me too. I live in England and it’s not the case they want Scotland to do well. Watching the last qualifiers in pubs, the majority of locals were cheering for whoever were playing Scotland.
Anyway, come on Uruguay – or England if I bet on them of course!

    *** SUAREZ TO SCORE ANYTHING 11/8 – WITH BETFAIR….YES PLEASE ***

  14. Avatar of harpreet
    harpreet 10 years ago

o then…..Top tips from me tonight on the football ;-)

    1) SUAREZ to score anytime – 11/8
I feel that this is a steal. SUAREZ will be a handful tonight…Wanting to get started with a bang !!! England full backs will find it hard with a fully fit SUAREZ…Can see him scoring in 90mins

    2) Rooney to get booked in 90mins – 5/2 Pressure is on Rooney…He needs to perform. Can see him getting stuck in and been shown the yellow by flying in with a tackle.

    3) BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE – 7/10
Not a great price…However shows how much this bet seems realistic. Both teams can’t afford to lose, can see them both scoring to tonight.

    4) finally….who will win ?
It’s a tough game to call..However I am going for England NOT to lose – 1/3

Big stake on this….I can feel a tough game tonight so a simple bet on England NOT TO LOSE is what I’m going for as a safe bet.

    Good luck all :-)

  15. Avatar of dave

reckon sturridge to score anytime is a better bet than suarez

I think also red card in the game a decent bet as Uruguay self implode if they go behind or things don’t go their way

  16. Avatar of MiniDuffman
    MiniDuffman 10 years ago

I’ll be taking a few goalscorers with the odds looking decent.

Suarez is obviously the biggest danger for Uruguay and is currently avaliable at 15/8.

Sturridge will likely be the main striker so also looks good at 2/1.

Stand out bet for me though will be Sterling to score at 9/2. Can’t see the defence coping with him.

Expecting goals, and one out of the three will make me break even. This is where Cavani, Rooney and Welbeck get the goals isn’t it?

Lol, 1-0 will do for me. Regarding the coverage, it’s “British” TV, why would they be talking about Japan V Ivory Coast? If it had been Scotland playing Italy it would have been the same.

If Scotland were in the competition i would support Scotland in all their games unless they’re playing England, maybe that’s why i don’t get the anti – English schtick.

      Anyway, enough.

Richie, my “duff” day yesterday involved confidently backing Croatia and taking Chile at 6-4 on the double chance. Inplay I backed Croatia to score next goal a couple of times and commented “there were more goals to come”. Some of my Holland bets came in and some didn’t. I had Holland to score 3+, RVP to score and Robben to score. I also flagged up Cahill to score and agreed with yes to btts and overs. If that’s a “duff” day I’ll have it.

David, it’s all about opinions. You know mine but good luck with your bet. Just one thing – watch the Uruguay price as I’d imagine it will rise as England are going to be popular today.

  28. Avatar of shaky
    shaky 10 years ago

I am amazed at the prices for this game to be honest. Everyone seems to be on England but I really don’t understand why. They haven’t beaten a top side away from Wembley for years and, for all their endeavour against Italy, they didn’t really trouble Sirigu too often.

I know Uruguay have their own issues but they are rightly ranked higher than England and are playing on South American soil and will have the crowd mostly on their side.

If i was pricing this game up, I’d make Uruguay slight favourites so 7/4 draw no bet looks like a gift to me.

    • Avatar of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 10 years ago

shaky, if you watched the two openers England look the better bet but it’s no banker. England will shorten because UK bookies will rack up massive liabilities with millions of patriotic bets. When it was prices up last week Uruguay were 7-4 marginal favourites but that all changed when they lost to Costa Rica. Right, I need to go.

    • Avatar of shaky
      shaky 10 years ago

Think i would much rather be on Japan to beat Greece than England to beat Uruguay at similar odds. I may well be proved wrong though!

  29. Avatar of GaryEdinburgh
    GaryEdinburgh 10 years ago

Be watching and see England qualifying, consider Uaregay poor but after holland/spain try not and base opinions on one game. Maybe Costa Rica were good, like spain more rubbish than holland world beaters.
So sensible betting stakes warning, have a wee bit on Rooney to get booked in 90mins – 5/2 ta. Not get on Sauraz as saw Spain play with injured striker, costa.

GL England, lot of friends. Big YES man but problem is london elite rule. Don’t understand when people go against England, like in Germany v England not like germany did bad in history.lol

All English i know agree, Media is problem and they hate it also. They don’t think they will win but media go nuts, we all know the media and BBC lie and do not represent the people but profit and networks.
Anyhow i really fancy Columbia at 2.15, was going to go strong but no one fancies them ?
Also think Greece are very poor (Cant score) and consider Japan, but dont know if they have quality to win and punish. Guys what you reckon, decent evens shots or not. Cant bet unders to watch a game. lol

Really fancy Engerrrrrland to beat a recently very poor Uruguay tonight @ 11/10.
BTTS as pointed out by Mr F looks very certain given that England have scored in 10 of their last 12 W/C games and Uruguay have scored in last 7 odds for this are around 4/6 but something id consider a punt on the corners market to get some real value.
A remarkable stat ive found is that England averaged more corners than any other side in european qualifiers averaging 9.8 corners, looking more recently England hammered Italy in this bracket 9-2 in the first group game,do you see what im getting at??? A must win game for both teams should provide a lot of attacks and a lot of corners.
Consider England -2 corners @ 6/5 or over 11 total corners in match @ 11/8

Agree with Mr F on Colombia to win but id conseder them to win and Btts in the Colombia v Ivory coast,it looks very likely considering the Ivorians have scored in thier last 26 games odds of 7/2 represent great value given that both sides are a lot better in attack than defence.
Hopefully im onto a winner with the above Stats ;)
