Monday's tips were dreadful to say the least, and I did expect a lot more from them, even if they weren't to win, I thought they'd be going close.
Youthful King was his usual keen going self, but wasn't overly keen so for him to go out like a light was very poor, and it's safe to say that I will not be touching him for the foreseeable.
Standbackandlook was also in a decent position in his race, but also went backwards very quickly. The Racing Post comments prior to the race were that he was going backwards in terms of his progression. I didn't see it like that, but that performance definitely backed up their opinion.
Expressionless 9/4 – Nottingham 3.18
I would like to get stuck into the start of the Punchestown festival, but the prices of the horses I like are very short and I'm not too confident in others, so I've decided to dodge it, but hopefully there will be selections up at that meeting later in the week.
Instead, I've gone for Expressionless in the 1m 6f race at Nottingham as my sole selection of Tuesday's racing.
Even though this is a Class 4 race, it seems quite deep for the grade, and you can give a chance to a fair few who are turning up. I've decided to go for Expressionless on the basis that he is on his last winning handicap mark of 73 and that he handles the fast ground better than most. He managed to rack up two wins over this trip last season, with the latter being at the Racing League meeting worth £27k to the winner, which is definitely one of the strongest pieces of form in the race, and given how competitive those Racing League races are, this is definitely ane easier task, despite it being a good race for the grade.
He has had a comeback run already this season, which is always a nice thing to see for the start of the new flat season, as it means he should be racefit. Not only that, it was evident it was a prep run for a race as he was running over four furlongs shorter than his ideal trip, but he acquitted himself very nicely, being a huge eyecatcher in his third-placed finish at Newbury.
