Thursday was a complete disaster, with all three selections running well below par.

Far Above Mary finished last of 9, Jayarbe went out like a light when Ryan Moore upped the tempo on the eventual winner, and Arch Legend was given a horrific ride by Franny Norton.

I was more disappointed with Arch Legend than anything else. I understand he is a horse who likes to go forward, but he didn't break well, and Franny threw the kitchen sink at him as he left the stalls to get a position up front, using up a lot of petrol In the process.

I've two selections for Friday, which come from the meeting at Chester.

Botanical 11/4 – Chester 14:35

Botanical has a wide draw to contend with in this contest but I fancy his chances.  He's already won twice on good to firm ground and won decisively on both outings. Karl Burke is a shrewd trainer, in particular with his youngsters, and with Botanical still only a four-year-old there's no doubt in my mind that he can improve him further this season.

I was impressed with his last outing which came in October of last year. He beat Mr Professor by five lengths and the form of that run has received a boost as Mr Professor went on to land the Lincoln by five lengths on the day.

Passenger 9/4 – Chester 15:05

It was a tough little race to figure out but I finally decided on Passenger for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

I was impressed with Passenger's win in the Wood Ditton at Newmarket when he traveled beautifully into the race from off the pace and stayed on strongest to win by three lengths. My selection then contested in the Dante Stakes at York and after rewatching the race he can probably count himself a tad unlucky not to win the race. He got stuck behind a wall of horses with no clear run but stayed on well into third once the gap finally opened.

Passenger then went to the Derby at Epsom, he didn't run his race that day but given he only had his debut a month before that, you can argue that's a lot to take on for a horse with little experience. My selection got back to winning ways when landing a listed event at Windsor on his most recent outing when showing a great attitude in the final furlong to see off the challenge from West Wind Blows.
