The Championship programme continues on Saturday, with three fixtures offering contrasting betting opportunities based on recent results, home and away records and underlying performances.
Birmingham City have established themselves among the promotion contenders, while Southampton's results place them alongside the division's leading sides despite their points deduction. Cardiff City also enter the weekend with an unbeaten home record.
Our three selections focus on Birmingham's attacking consistency, Cardiff's home resilience and disciplinary trends, and Southampton's substantial advantage over a struggling Preston side.
Recent results remain central to the assessment. xG, xGA and venue-specific statistics provide further evidence for each selection.
Birmingham City v Swansea City
Birmingham City return to St Andrew's on Saturday with kick-off at 15:00 UK time. Chris Davies' side enter the fixture after an impressive 3-0 victory over Millwall on Tuesday, a result which moved them into the Championship's automatic promotion places.
Alex Cochrane, Max Bird and Jay Stansfield scored against Millwall as Birmingham registered 19 shots, with eight on target. Davies subsequently argued that his team deserved their position in the top two. The hosts have won five of their past six league matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding only twice. Their recent performances have combined attacking productivity with improved defensive results.
Swansea City arrive following a 3-1 defeat at Portsmouth. Vitor Matos' side equalised through Zan Vipotnik's 85th-minute penalty, only to concede twice during stoppage time. Despite enjoying 64% possession, the visitors failed to convert their territorial advantage into points.
Birmingham's home scoring record provides the strongest support for our selection. They have scored 17 goals in seven Championship matches at St Andrew's, averaging 2.43 per game.
Six of those seven fixtures have produced at least two Birmingham goals, an 85.7% success rate. The Blues have also reached that mark in each of their past four home appearances.
Their underlying attacking numbers support the trend. Birmingham average 1.72 xG across their recent home matches, generating opportunities consistently rather than relying entirely on exceptional finishing.
Swansea's away defensive record raises further concerns. They have conceded 13 goals in seven league trips, with nine arriving across their past four away fixtures. The recent damage includes a 5-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers and Tuesday's loss at Portsmouth. Across those four matches, Swansea allowed 7.68 xGA, averaging 1.92 per game.
The visitors have conceded at least twice in two of those four fixtures, although their recent results suggest an increasing vulnerability against opponents capable of sustained attacking pressure. Birmingham have demonstrated precisely that attacking consistency at home. Their scoring record, recent results and Swansea's defensive problems all support another multiple-goal return.
- Best bet: Birmingham City to score 2+ goals at 10/11 with Coral
Cardiff City v Burnley
A dramatic midweek draw provides the backdrop to Cardiff City's meeting with Burnley at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Brian Barry-Murphy's side appeared set for an impressive victory over West Ham United on Wednesday after Jack Moylan scored a first-half hat-trick. Cardiff led 3-0 at the interval but eventually drew 3-3 after a remarkable second-half recovery from the visitors.
Barry-Murphy praised Cardiff's opening performance but acknowledged that his players struggled to halt West Ham's momentum after conceding the first goal.
Burnley face another difficult assignment following a disappointing start to the Championship campaign. They have won only once in 14 league matches meaning that Fabio Celestini was brought into the club but he is still searching for greater consistency.
The Burnley head coach has spoken positively about his squad's training performances but recognises the need to translate that work into better results.
Cardiff's home record offers a strong starting point for the betting assessment. They have won three and drawn four of their seven Championship fixtures at the Cardiff City Stadium, remaining unbeaten throughout. The Bluebirds have scored 16 home goals, averaging 2.29 per match. Their attacking production is supported by a home xG average of 2.34, indicating regular creation of scoring opportunities.
Burnley's away record contrasts sharply. They have registered one victory, two draws and four defeats in seven league trips, conceding 16 goals. The visitors' defensive record supports the expectation of goals, while Cardiff's unbeaten home sequence strengthens the double chance element of our selection.
Disciplinary statistics provide the final consideration. Both teams have received cards in six of Cardiff's seven home league matches, representing an 85.7% occurrence rate. Burnley's away fixtures have produced exactly the same record, with both teams carded in six of seven matches.
Referee Oliver Langford has carded both sides in 57% of his appointments. That figure is less convincing than the two clubs' venue-specific records and represents the principal concern.
The selection requires Cardiff to avoid defeat, at least two match goals and both teams to receive a card. Cardiff's home resilience, attacking output and the disciplinary records support the combination.
- Best bet: Cardiff double chance, over 1.5 match goals and both teams carded at 1/1 with Bet365
Preston North End v Southampton
Southampton travel to Deepdale on Saturday knowing that their Championship position does not fully reflect their performances this season. A four-point deduction has reduced their official total, but Tonda Eckert's side have earned 28 points from 14 league matches. Without the penalty, Southampton would be level on points with leaders Middlesbrough.
Preston North End occupy the opposite end of the standings after a difficult opening period. Their results have left them struggling to compete consistently, particularly against opponents from the upper half of the division.
Southampton extended their unbeaten sequence with a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday. Samuel Edozie cancelled out Isaac Price's penalty, although Eckert admitted that his side had shown West Brom too much respect during the first half.
The visitors have collected 14 points from their past six league matches, recording four wins and two draws. Preston have taken only one point across the same period.
The overall records reveal the extent of the difference. Southampton have won eight, drawn four and lost twice, avoiding defeat in 85.7% of their Championship fixtures. Preston have recorded one victory, two draws and 11 defeats. They have lost 78.6% of their league matches, scoring only 12 goals in the process.
Their home performances provide little encouragement. Preston have lost five of seven matches at Deepdale, scoring seven times and conceding 13. Against teams currently occupying the top half of the Championship, Preston have registered no victories, two draws and five defeats. Those seven fixtures have produced six goals scored and 15 conceded.
Southampton's away results are less dominant than their overall record, with two wins, three draws and two defeats. Nevertheless, they have conceded only nine goals across seven league trips. The underlying figures also favour the visitors. Southampton have recorded 12.1 xPTS across their past eight matches, compared with Preston's 5.8. Across the latest four relevant venue fixtures, Southampton have produced 6.1 away xPTS against Preston's 3.9 at home.
The under 4.5 goals condition is supported by Preston's limited attacking production and Southampton's away defensive record. Preston's sustained losing sequence, Southampton's superior results and the contrast in recent form make the visitors the stronger selection.
- Best bet: Southampton to win and under 4.5 goals at 6/5 with Skybet
