Wednesday’s World Cup Top Tips: Fine Margins Could Give Danes the Edge

The last-16 is starting to shape following the conclusion of Groups A and B yesterday, today we'll learn another four teams that'll take their place in the knock-out stages of the World Cup.

Argentina gave themselves a mountain to climb when they lost their first match of the tournament but they're halfway there after a win over Mexico and could even reach the summit of the group with a win over Poland tonight.

The Argentinians started the tournament as second favourites but a couple of flat performances has seen them slip to fourth on the list at 10/1. That'll change if they can finish first in Group C and avoid a last-16 clash with France.

Poland's fate is in their own hands but although they top the group their position is quite precarious with both Saudi Arabia and Mexico in a position to overtake them with a win. A point would be enough for the Poles but that's easier said than done when faced with Lionel Messi and co.

There aren't quite echoes of Maradona in '86 just yet but Messi has been instrumental for the Argentinians so far, while some were ready to pen his footballing obituary. The No.10 isn't ready to be written off just yet. You can get better than evens (21/20) on him to score for a third consecutive game and that can't be ruled out in Argentina's hour of need.

As highlighted on our World Cup Stats post there's been a real trend of games being goalless and drawn at half-time as teams feel their way in to matches. This could be another where both teams are desperate not to lose it in the the early stages so we're backing Argentina to prevail in the second half but backing Draw/Argentina on the Half-Time/Full-Time market at 3/1.

In Group D it looks like a straight shoot-out between Australia and Denmark for second place this afternoon. France are already through and should cement top spot with a win over Tunisia so all eyes will be on the clash in Al Wakrah where the Aussies most likely just need to avoid defeat (assuming Tunisia don't beat France) to qualify for the knock-out stages for just the second time in the Socceroos' history.

The Danes can count themselves lucky that their fate is still in their own hands after taking just one point in their two games so far. They proved themselves a very capable outfit during qualifying and in their recent Nations League campaign, so we've not seen the best of them yet.

There's no second chances after today though and there should be enough quality in their ranks to get the win they need at 1/2.  The Aussies will push them all the way though and it could be a close affair so back the game to be won by single goal (for either side, which covers a suprise one-goal Australia win too) at 13/8.
