1955. The last time Newcastle won a major honour but there's a feeling that the next one won't be too far away.

Tonight they could take a step closer to silverware when they visit Southampton in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies won 4-1 on their last visit to St Mary's and made it 15 unbeaten in the Premier League at the weekend with a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

The Saints pulled off the result of the round in the quarter-finals when they disposed of Manchester City but they're 4/1 to qualify for the final over the two legs. Newcastle are hot favourites at 1/6 to clinch a day at Wembley and 6/4 to lift the trophy.

First legs are always tricky to decipher. Will Southampton go for a win to take to St James' Park? Will Eddie howe be happy to take a draw away from home?

Two-legged semi-finals have been a feature of the competition since it's inception in 1960 and there's a slight trend towards the first leg of matches going under 2.5 goals. 57.5% have seen fewer than three goals since the turn of the century, not exactly compelling but Under 2.5 goals tonight pays 4/5.

Newcastle have been involved in four goalless draws in their last 10 games. Defensively they've been excellent, conceding just two goals since their last visit to Southampton – those both came when an understrengthed side were dumped out of the FA Cup by Sheffield Wednesday.

Southampton though have been in decent scoring form, finding the net in eight of their last 10, scoring 12.

With 180 minutes of football ahead of them it's unlikey either side will be out the traps too quickly. Newcastle's first goals comes in the 43rd minutes on average, while for the Saints it's the 45th minute so no goal in the first 30 minutes looks a good option at 5/6. If you're feeling a bit braver it's 7/4 there to be no goals in the first half.

Shout out to The Caddy who enjoyed another profitable weekend with his golf tips. His Super Banker Nap won thanks to the tournament winner Vicor Perez to beating Lee Westwood in the head-to-head match bet in Abu Dhabi. In the PGA event The Caddy's 5 points Nap also won with Tony Finau winning his matchbet and each-way money returned via Shauffele, who finished 3rd at 20/1 and Tom Kim who place 6th at 22/1.

Next Everton manager, anyone else think 9/4 decent odds for Sean Dyche?

    • maccathered 1 year ago

It’s the only sensible appointment given the blue noses predicament.

      1
    • jimba 1 year ago

Bielsa is an interesting 🤔 option, did a great job at Leeds up until the end, also Kenright is not a fan of Sean dyche apparently 🙄

    • richb20806 1 year ago

I just hope it’s Bielsa for pure entertainment value. Connor Coady will be crucified every game in a Bielsa team.

The common sense appointment is Dyche

If they sign Bielsa then it’s good by Everton they’d get beat 5-0 every week🤣🤣🤣

  10. evens knievens 1 year ago

The thing with Everton is that they’ve had seasons like this occasionally over the last 30 years (going back to when Coventry were in the top flight) and they always managed to escape somehow.
There’s not many great options there. Fans will be depressed at the idea of Dyche but I don’t think the more glamorous options will be interested.
I would go with Big Dunc till the end of the season and start looking now for who they want to bring in next term. They aren’t so bad they can’t escape and I think Dunc is the man. Hope he negotiates a bib bonus for if they stay up.

    • maccathered 1 year ago

I don’t buy the fans will be depressed with the idea of Dyche thing that’s just your typical fan view. Dyche did wonders at Burnley given the funds he had, kept them in the league until eventually the total lack of investment caught up with them. Everton though would be a lot better prospect because he would have more funds, in the short term Dyche would get their defence sorted out and keep them up, with funds to spend he would build a good team who no one wants to play,

      4
    • elvis parsley 1 year ago

Its up top they need sorting.
They can’t buy a goal for love nor money.
They should have got rid of Gordon when Chelsea offered way too much for an unproven young striker and reinvested in a proven scorer and Calvert lewin is either injured or when he does play he comes across as a lazy sod who doesn’t care about the club, I’d have signed Danny ings last week, not prolific but he’d be more of a team player than Calvert lewin.

Will Pickford be around if they go down, doubt it very much.
1st game in their plush new stadium could be against Rotherham or the like if they don’t get the new manager boost when Steve Bruce comes in 😆⬅️⬅️ this is a joke, well I hope for Everton it is.

They have been decomposing for years, a series of big name managers spent big money without thinking about a philosophy or a way of playing.

Fans are blaming Mashiri the owner but he has spent more than enough not to see the club where it is now.

Too many quick fixes that haven’t worked, managers and players
Could they bring back big Dunc yet again to galvanize the club ?? Would be embarrassing if they did for a once proud club.

I agree with macca, in they dyche is the perfect choice, forget sexy football, it’s points that they need, then 2 or 3 years of mid table mediocrity as that is the best Everton fans can wish for right now.

Good news is there are just 3 points seperating the bottom 7 so the new boss won’t need many wins to make the club safe, easier said than done though

    Double a shade under 3-1

Looks a pretty decent double as don’t see many goals in saints game with newcastle defence being good and they aren’t scoring like they were early in the season and just going with DH stats on salford attacking first half strongly.

    Bet for January

    Colchester v Salford

Salford over 0.5 first half goals @11/8 bet365 betbuilder

Can’t ignore Salford’s 11 first half goals in the last 10 games. Mentioned the other day how Neil Wood has got them quick out of the traps of late. Conor McAleny being the key reason for this, since his return from injury it has seen Salford to be one of the teams top of the form table. 11/8 is good value imo, I would price this bet up as about 10/11 if I was laying it. McAleny starts tonight and happy with the team he has out.

98% of stake on at 11/8
2% of stake on over 1.5 first half Salford goals @ 9/1

Gambling is a game of chance fox, no guarantees of making profit.
If you are paying for tips you may be gambling for the wrong reasons.
I’ve voiced my disapproval of paid tipsters before here and won’t repeat them but my advice for what it’s worth is to find an honest way of making the money you seek and consign gambling to being an affordable hobby and not a means of making an income.
