LIVERPOOL will be looking to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since October when they take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night.
The Reds looked set to suffer a shock 3-2 defeat at home to Fulham on Sunday before staging a dramatic late comeback to win 4-3.
That victory along with results elsewhere over the weekend means Jurgen Klopp’s side now sit second in the table, just two points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Looking to keep pace with the table-topping Gunners, Liverpool will set out to secure another three points at Sheffield United this midweek.
The beleaguered Blades hit rock bottom of the Premier following a 5-0 battering at relegation rivals Burnley on Saturday.
That bruising setback is reportedly set to be the final nail in Paul Heckingbottom’s coffin, who looks set to be relieved of his duties and swiftly replaced by former Bramall Lane boss Chris Wilder.
Outright Betting
Sheffield United are huge 14/1 (Ladbrokes) underdogs as they look to land what would be just their second Premier League win of the season while an all square affair at Bramall Lane is as big as 7/1 (PaddyPower).
Liverpool are without a win in their last four Premier League away games but they are understandably short priced 1/5 (Ladbrokes) favourites to snap that sequence on Wednesday night.
Betting Angles
Liverpool are unbackable at the above-mentioned price but backing the visitors to emerge victorious in a game that produces under five goals will boost the odds to 20/23/(Ladbrokes).
While the Reds will arrive in the Steel City off the back of their aforementioned 4-3 thriller with Sheffield United, that was just their first Premier League victory of the season that has featured over four strikes, with the other eight all going under the 4.5 goal barrier.
Admittedly, the Merseysiders are more than capable of mauling hapless Sheffield United this midweek, however I suspect Jurgen Klopp will be pretty content to see his side negotiate this fixture with minimum fuss.
The frantic festive calendar is beginning to ramp up and the Liverpool chief is likely to have one eye on his side’s lunchtime trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday, which is likely to be a sterner test than the one in which Sheffield United will provide.
What’s more, Chris Wilder’s reported return should give the hosts a boost of sorts, and you would expect the incoming Blades boss will look to implement a back to basics approach following Saturday’s shredding at Burnley.
With that in mind, coupled with the fact that eight of Sheffield United’s 11 league defeats this season have generated less than five match goals, backing Liverpool to follow suit looks the way to go at 20/23 (Ladbrokes)
Switching gears to a player-based selection, I'll also back Sheffield United's John Fleck to pick up a card at 21/5 (UniBet)
The Scottish midfielder, who was booked in his first Premier League start of the season on Saturday, has been a booking magnet for the Blades for a number of years and he looks worth taking to have his name taken when Liverpool come to town.
