Quickly gaining momentum, Real Madrid face an inconsistent RB Leipzig side that simply cannot rise to the challenge when playing away from home. It looks set to be yet another tough away trip for the Red Bulls and another cause for celebration for Jose Mourinho's side.
It was simply impossible for Real Madrid not to follow up their historic comeback – from 3-1 to 3-4 away at AS Roma a week ago, when they scored three goals in the space of seven minutes – with another dominant victory.
And, accordingly, Sevilla also suffered four goals at the weekend – only this time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Whilst we might say that Los Blancos still have room for improvement in their away fixtures, the same cannot be said of their home matches, where they have won all six of their games so far this season.
This form is likely to be enough to see them through against RB Leipzig, who conceded six goals away at Bayern Munich at the weekend.
Overall, the Red Bulls have suffered four consecutive away defeats, with a goal difference of 15:3. In the last round of the Champions League, they lost 4–1 to tournament debutants Como.
This isn’t just a temporary dip in form, but a trend we’ve seen in their away fixtures over the last few seasons. The picture becomes even more worrying when we consider that they’ve lost each of their last five away matches in the UCL.
How the bookies view it: Los Blancos are unstoppable at home
The bookmakers aren’t offering any value on a Real Madrid win, with odds of just 1/4. However, if you’re looking for an upset, you can take advantage of the massive 9/1. A draw is also quite attractive at 11/2.
Recent head-to-head: Closer than it may seem
To tell the truth, RB Leipzig haven’t fared all that badly against Real Madrid, although they have only one win from four matches (L2, D1).
At least they’ve never lost by more than two goals, and the last time they were at the Bernabeu, they held them to a 1–1 draw.
Players to watch: Diomande is the new future
I’d steer clear of the RB Leipzig players, simply because, even with Real Madrid’s rather lax defence, I don’t expect them to score more than one goal, and trying to predict exactly who will be lucky enough to score is far too difficult and pointless.
Kylian Mbappe is the obvious choice for anyone, but the odds on him are minimal and, unless he’s part of a combination bet, there’s no point.
I’ll be going for Yan Diomande, who has slotted in perfectly with the team and has played a key role in the side’s results over the last three matches, with two goals and two assists.
Probable line-ups
Real Madrid: Courtois, Carreras, Huijsen, Konate, Valverde, Guler, Tchouameni, Bellingham, Diomande, Vinicius, Mbappe
RB Leipzig: Vandervoordt, Raum, Lukeba, Orban, Baku, El Aynaoui, Banzuzi, Nusa, Nkunku, Gruda, Romulo
Anything else catch the eye?
The bookmakers are expecting at least four goals in this match, and quite rightly so, given Real Madrid’s recent form and RB Leipzig’s dismal away form.
I also reckon we’ll see a high-scoring match – much to the visitors’ dismay, so I’m going straight for over 2.5 goals for Real Madrid. It’s possible we might see a dip in form following last week, but personally, I doubt it.
I also reckon they’ll score at least once in each half, given the poor starts the visitors tend to make.
