Fulham host Chelsea at Craven Cottage on Monday night, with former Real Madrid and Liverpool teammates Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso meeting as opposing managers for the first time. Arbeloa begins his first season in charge of Fulham against a Chelsea squad reshaped by another massive summer spending spree.
Fulham produced a functional home record last season without controlling matches consistently. They averaged 1.24 xG and conceded 1.42 xGA, with both figures sitting closer to the bottom half than the leading teams. Their home xG ratio of 0.47 ranked 14th in the Premier League.
They still scored regularly enough at Craven Cottage, with both teams finding the net in 53% of their matches and Fulham failing to score in only 16%. Their attacking output was therefore more reliable than their overall chance creation suggested.
The summer brought targeted recruitment rather than a major rebuild. Gonzalo Garcia joined from Real Madrid for £34m and Cesar Palacios arrived for £9m, while Sasa Lukic and Issa Diop both moved to Ipswich for fees of £9m.
Arbeloa has warned that Fulham face a difficult opening month and still require further work, although he believes Garcia and Palacios possess the ambition and qualities required for his system. He has also praised the structure left by Marco Silva following four seasons at the club, describing the transition as straightforward.
Chelsea's spending has been on a different scale, with a net outlay of around £193m. Morgan Rogers arrived for £117m, Maxence Lacroix cost £52m, Marco Palestra joined for £48m and Geovany Quenda was signed for £43m.
Those deals were partly offset by Andrey Santos joining Manchester United for £48m and Marc Cucurella moving to Real Madrid for £47m. Alonso now has a deep squad and no European football to manage, giving Chelsea more time to prepare between league matches.
The two managers remain close friends after playing together for Real Madrid and Liverpool, with their families spending time together in London during the week. Both have made clear that their friendship will be put aside during the match.
Fulham will be without Tom Cairney following surgery on his left knee, while Joachim Andersen is suspended. Arbeloa must therefore begin without two experienced members of his squad.
Chelsea also have defensive concerns. Wesley Fofana is suspended, while Emmanuel Emegha and Jordan Henderson are injured. Danny Welbeck is doubtful after completing a reduced training programme, and Levi Colwill should be fit despite concerns.

Fulham are 16/5, implying a 23.8% chance of winning. The draw is priced at 3/1 and carries an implied probability of 25%, while Chelsea are 10/11 favourites at 52.4%.
Over 2.5 goals is available at 4/6, implying a 60% chance. Both teams to score is priced at 8/13 and carries an implied probability of 61.9%.
Head to head: Chelsea have strong record
Chelsea have won 15 of the previous 24 Premier League meetings between the clubs since 2008. Fulham have recorded only three victories during that period, with the remaining six fixtures ending level.
The recent record has been more competitive, although Chelsea have still won three of the past five meetings. Fulham took the latest fixture 2-1 at Craven Cottage in January 2026, showing the historical imbalance has narrowed.
Player to watch: Joao Pedro constant threat for visitors
Joao Pedro was Chelsea's most productive forward last season, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists across 35 appearances. His 73 shots included 28 on target, making him their most consistent route to goal.
He also has previous form in this fixture, scoring when Chelsea beat Fulham at home last August. Joao Pedro played only 16 minutes from the bench during the return meeting at Craven Cottage, which Fulham won 2-1.
Alonso has praised his development as a leader as well as an attacker. With Chelsea missing several players and adapting to a new system, Joao Pedro's finishing and experience should carry greater importance.

The home and away goals data provides the strongest betting angle. Fulham's home matches went over 2.5 goals in 53% of games last season and averaged 2.63, while both teams scored in 53%.
Chelsea's away fixtures were considerably more open, with 74% finishing over 2.5 goals, the joint-highest rate in the Premier League alongside Liverpool. Their matches averaged 3.11 goals on the road, supported by regular attacking output and an unreliable defensive record.
Chelsea's current defensive problems strengthen the argument. Fofana is suspended, Henderson is injured and Colwill has not been confirmed as fully fit. Alonso could therefore start with a new defensive structure containing players who have had limited competitive time together.
Fulham lack Chelsea's attacking depth, but their failed-to-score rate of only 16% at Craven Cottage shows they regularly found a route to goal. Alex Iwobi and Gonzalo Garcia give Arbeloa enough attacking quality to test a defence weakened by absences and summer changes.
Chelsea should create chances against a Fulham side that conceded 1.42 xGA per home match, while their own away record makes a clean sheet difficult to trust. Both sides' relevant venue splits therefore point towards goals at each end and at least three overall.
The main bet is both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 20/21, implying a 51.2% chance. The selection is supported by Fulham's consistent home scoring record, Chelsea's high-scoring away matches and the defensive absences affecting Alonso's side.
