Dundee United vs HibernianScottish League Cup, KO: 19:45 Sep 23, 2021, Tannadice Park
DUNDEE UNITED play host to Hibernian in the last-eight of the Premier Sports Cup at Tannadice on Thursday night.
The Terrors will head into this cup tie in high spirits after emerging victorious in the first Scottish Premiership Dundee derby of the season.
The appointment of Tam Courts was far from universally popular but Sunday's triumph would have gone some way to getting the United boss into the good books of the Tannadice faithful.
Courts will be aiming to further endear himself to the United fanbase by booking a trip to Hampden at the expense of Hibernian this midweek.
However, the capital club have been regular guests at the national stadium in recent years, with the Hibees bidding to reach their fourth-consecutive semi-final under Jack Ross' stewardship.
Hibs maintained their unbeaten start to the Scottish Premiership season on Saturday but they were denied victory as St Mirren pinched a point in the dying embers of the game at Easter Road.
Dundee United have failed to topple Hibs in each of the last seven meetings and that is reflected in the odds, with the hosts 21/10 (SBK) outsiders while the draw inside 90 minutes is trading at 11/5 (SBK) with the same firm.
Hibernian triumphed in each of their two visits to Tannadice last term and the same outcome on Thursday night pays 11/8 at SBK.
Hibs are worthy favourites here but they are unlikely to have things all their own way so I'm going to swerve the match result market here and instead dip into the number of cards market.
Over 3.5 match cards at Tannadice on Thursday night has been chalked up at 11/10 with McBookie and that particular play makes plenty of appeal.
Dundee United currently occupy second-place in the Scottish Premiership yellow cards received standings, with a lofty three cautions per 90 minute average.
Hibs, on the other hand, are averaging a lowly 1.33 cards per-game but it's worth noting that Jack Ross' side shared eight cards with both Motherwell and Dundee respectively during recent top-flight road trips.
What's more, Willie Collum has been selected to take charge of this quarter-final showdown, an appointment that only adds to the appeal of siding with cards during this City of Discovery dust-up.
The experienced Scottish whistler has flashed four or more cards in three Premiership outings this term and I'm more than happy to side with a repeat here in what should be a closely-fought cup tie under the Tannadice lights on Thursday night.
I'll also dip into the anytime goalscorer market where Hibs forward Martin Boyle looks overpriced to get on the scoresheet at boosted odds of 3/1 with McBookie.
Speed merchant Boyle has already bagged eight goals this season and he is also on penalties which is always an added incentive when delving into this market.
