Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season on 52 points, with underlying numbers reflecting a side still in transition. They averaged 1.63 xG and 1.52 xGA at home, while a home xPTS total of 27.58 ranked 12th in the division.
Tottenham endured one of the poorest league campaigns in the club's recent history, finishing 17th on 41 points. Their underlying numbers offered little encouragement either, averaging 1.25 xG and 1.48 xGA at home, while a home xPTS total of 23.42 ranked 16th.
Both clubs begin this fixture under head coaches appointed during last season. Chelsea turned to Xabi Alonso after a turbulent campaign that saw Enzo Maresca leave in January, Liam Rosenior appointed before departing four months later, and Calum McFarlane twice stepping in as interim boss. The season ultimately ended with defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Roberto De Zerbi, meanwhile, took charge of Tottenham at the end of March, guiding the club clear of relegation before beginning his first full preseason in charge.
Chelsea's summer has been headlined by the arrival of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British transfer record fee of £117 million, alongside Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha. Chelsea arrive after a dramatic 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers in Alonso's first match in charge. Seventeen-year-old Dastan Satpaev opened the scoring inside five minutes before Chelsea fell behind three times, only for Joao Pedro to transform the contest with a remarkable nine-minute hat-trick after coming off the bench.
Alonso described the match as “very useful” afterwards and praised the striker's determination. Romeo Lavia missed the game with a hamstring injury, while several World Cup players also remain unavailable.
Tottenham's latest outing finished 1-1 against Sydney FC before De Zerbi's side won 4-2 on penalties to maintain their unbeaten start to preseason after earlier victories over MK Dons and Auckland FC. Mathys Tel scored from a superb first-half free-kick before Takahiro Sekine equalised after the break.
Andy Robertson and Sandro Tonali both made their first appearances of the summer, while James Maddison and Mateus Fernandes were absent. Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi have yet to rejoin the squad following the World Cup, meaning several academy players are again expected to feature prominently.

Chelsea have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning 12 of the last 16 meetings between the clubs. Tottenham have managed just one victory during that run, alongside three draws, while Chelsea also recorded six consecutive wins between September 2021 and November 2023.
The two Premier League meetings last season both went Chelsea's way, a 1-0 victory in North London followed by a 2-1 home success.
Player to watch: Joao Pedro to continue strong start
Joao Pedro could hardly have made a better first impression. His nine-minute hat-trick against Western Sydney Wanderers changed the game completely and should earn him a first start of the tour.
Last season he registered 15 goals and five assists from 35 appearances, alongside 73 shots and 28 efforts on target, while he also scored the winning goal when Chelsea beat Tottenham earlier in the campaign.

These fixtures are often decided by whichever side adapts quickest to unfamiliar line-ups, and Chelsea appear to have greater momentum after scoring six against Western Sydney Wanderers. Tottenham remain unbeaten under Roberto De Zerbi this summer, but they needed penalties to get past Sydney FC and are still waiting for several senior internationals to return.
The goals market is the one that stands out. Chelsea's opening tour match produced 10 goals, while Tottenham have conceded in successive preseason fixtures despite facing weaker opposition than they meet here. With both managers continuing to rotate heavily and defensive partnerships still developing, both teams to score would be my preferred angle if a market becomes available.
Even in preseason, meetings between Chelsea and Tottenham rarely lack intensity. There is enough rivalry between these clubs to make this feel far more competitive than the average summer friendly.
