Brian Barry-Murphy's academy-led Cardiff rebuild gets its first Championship test on Monday evening, with Wrexham visiting Cardiff City Stadium after a season in which their results significantly outperformed their underlying numbers. Kick off is 8pm.
Cardiff return to the Championship after winning promotion from League One, with their 75.01 xPTS ranking seventh in the division. Their promotion was built heavily on home form, where they ranked first for xPTS and averaged 1.99 xG against only 0.95 xGA. Their away numbers were considerably weaker at 1.37 xG and 1.45 xGA.
Nathan Trott has arrived in goal from Copenhagen for around £1.8 million, while Jack Moylan joins from Lincoln City and Ryan Wintle has departed for MK Dons. Barry-Murphy has also leaned heavily on academy players, with centre back Dylan Lawlor among those given opportunities during a relatively quiet summer.
Wrexham finished seventh in the Championship with 71 points, but their underlying numbers raise questions about whether that position reflected their performances.
Their xPTS stood at only 57.85, a gap of more than 13 points between process and results. Their away defensive record also needs context. Wrexham kept clean sheets in 30% of their away matches, but five of those seven came against teams finishing in the bottom seven.
Both teams scored in 57% of their away matches and 74% at home, the latter tied for the highest rate in the Championship. Phil Parkinson's recruitment has been relatively quiet, with Anthony Patterson arriving in goal for a fee rising to £9.35 million and Ben Whiteman joining from Preston North End.
Cardiff's preseason has been packed with goals. A 6-0 defeat against Midtjylland was followed by wins of 6-1 against Cork City, 5-1 against Forest Green Rovers and 4-1 against Roma. They then opened their competitive campaign with a 3-2 Carabao Cup victory over Swindon Town.
That cup performance was backed by the numbers. Cardiff generated 2.26 xG against 1.13 xGA, with Yousef Salech scoring twice before debutant Jack Moylan settled the game late on.
Barry-Murphy's side have now scored at least three goals in four of their five preseason and cup fixtures, although their defensive record suggests the step up to Championship opposition will provide a much stronger test.
Wrexham's preparation produced wins over Manchester United and Leeds United, alongside a goalless draw with Wisla Krakow, before three successive one goal defeats against Liverpool, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
The Carabao Cup defeat to Middlesbrough was particularly tight, with Wrexham generating 1.59 xG against 1.63 xGA. Will Lankshear's acrobatic finish ultimately separated the teams, while Parkinson pointed towards limited training time following the club's US tour as useful context for the performance.

Cardiff City are 6/4, implying a 40% chance of winning. The draw is 13/5 at 27.8%, while Wrexham are 15/8 at 34.8%.

Cardiff have won eight of the 13 meetings between these clubs since 1991, with Wrexham winning three and the other two finishing level. The clubs went 23 years without meeting before last season, having spent much of that period in different divisions.
Their most recent meeting came at the Racecourse Ground in October 2025, when Cardiff won 2-1.
Player to watch: Callum Doyle continues to impress for Wrexham
Callum Doyle was named Wrexham's Young Player of the Season in 2025/26 after starting 32 of his 34 appearances. His attacking contribution from centre back also stood out, with 57 crosses, two goals and two assists across the campaign.
That distribution was evident again against Middlesbrough. Doyle created two clear first half opportunities with his left footed delivery and remains important to Wrexham's progression from defence. With Josh Windass unavailable, his ability to move possession forward and deliver into the box takes on added importance.

The underlying numbers make Cardiff the more interesting side. They won promotion with 75.01 xPTS and were particularly strong at home, averaging 1.99 xG and only 0.95 xGA. Wrexham present almost the opposite profile, collecting 71 Championship points from only 57.85 xPTS, a sizeable gap between results and performance.
The goals angle strengthens the Cardiff case. Barry-Murphy's side have scored at least three times in four of their five preseason and cup matches, including four against Roma, before generating 2.26 xG in the 3-2 win over Swindon. The concern is at the other end, where Cardiff have conceded in four of those five fixtures.
Wrexham give them every chance of continuing both trends. Both teams scored in 57% of their Championship away matches last season, while their seven away clean sheets look stronger once removed from context, with five coming against teams finishing in the bottom seven. Their own attacking numbers on the road were healthy enough to suggest they have the threat to contribute here.
My preferred angle is Cardiff to win and both teams to score. Cardiff's home numbers and attacking form give them the edge, while neither side's defensive profile makes a clean sheet particularly appealing. With both teams to score only 8/13 on its own, combining it with a Cardiff win pushes the price to a little over 17/5.
