After kicking off their campaign with a routine win, Inter Milan will be targeting some early momentum as they travel to newly promoted Cagliari for a Monday night Serie A fixture. The Nerazzurri are looking confident early in the season and should ease past the host.
Cagliari marked their return to the Italian topflight with a 0-0 draw at Torino in their opening fixture. They set out to frustrate the Turin club and looked solid at the back, limiting their visitors to just two attempts on target.
Veteran manager Claudio Ranieri will be pleased with the defensive display which could determine how Cagliari approach certain games. However, the lack of cutting edge in attack could be a problem as they struggled to create much in Turin.
One thing that will be pivotal for Cagliari as they aim to retain their topflight status is their home form. They last tasted defeat at Unipol Domus in October 2022, although there is now a major step up in quality from teams in Serie B.
Inter Milan kicked off their campaign with a routine 2-0 victory over Monza last weekend. They were largely untroubled for much of the encounter with goals in each half from Lautaro Martinez earning them all three points.
While there will be much more tougher fixtures to come, manager Simone Inzaghi will be pleased to have begun the quest to reclaim the title on a comfortable note. He will be hoping the next few weeks will be smoother than last season’s start where they claimed four wins and suffered as many defeats in their opening eight Serie A matches.
Having shown some quality on their travels towards the backend of last season, Inter Milan will be feeling confident heading to Cagliari. They have won four of their last five Serie A away matches, keeping clean sheets in all four wins.
How the bookies view it
Inter Milan have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at 4/9 with William Hill. Cagliari are considered outsiders at home with a win valued at 7/1 with BetVictor while a draw is set at odds of 7/2 by Betfred.
Head to head
Inter Milan often come out on top in this fixture and have won the last four meetings with Cagliari. The Nerazzurri did the double over their hosts during the 2021-22 campaign, winning 4-0 at San Siro before picking up a 3-1 victory at Unipol Domus.
Players to watch
Following the departure of Edin Dzeko and with Joaquin Correa nearing a move to Marseille, much of Inter Milan’s attacking threat will be carried by Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine striker showed he was up to the task with a brace on the opening weekend and could be worth keeping an eye on at 6/5 with William Hill.
With Cagliari seemingly lightweight in attack, Inter Milan will be targeting a shutout on Monday. Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni have a solid partnership in the heart of the defence and could lead the Nerazzurri to another clean sheet at 23/20 with Coral.
Anything else catch the eye?
Inter Milan have won to nil in four of their last five home matches and can be set for a similar outcome at 29/20 with Coral. With the Nerazzurri also boasting plenty of attacking quality, a -1 handicap could also be considered at 5/4 with Paddy Power.
The Nerazzurri also scored in both halves in their opening fixture and Monday’s clash can be tipped to follow a similar pattern at 5/4 with Coral.
