Atletico Madrid vs Lazio

, KO: 20:00 Dec 13, 2023, Wanda Metropolitano
Lazio

ATLETIICO MADRID and Lazio lock horns at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night to determine who will finish top of Champions League Group E.

The two teams have already guaranteed their respective spots in the round of 16 but who tops the group has still to be decided as just one point separates the pair.

Diego Simeone's side are currently occupying first place in the pool following impressive back-to-back wins over both Celtic and Feyenoord respectively.

Atleti are also ticking along nicely domestically, with their 2-1 win over Almeria on Sunday meaning they have now won three of their four La Liga assignments.

As for Lazio, they sealed their place in the Champions League knockout rounds with a 2-0 home win over bottom side Celtic a fortnight ago.

Despite their strong showings in Europe this season, Maurizio Sarri's men continue to underwhelm domestically, with Saturday's 1-1 draw at Verona leaving the Eagles languishing in ninth spot in Serie A.

Outright Betting

Atletico Madrid are odds-on 3/5 favourites at Bet 365 as they set out to make it three home wins from three in this season's Champions League.

Lazio can only leapfrog their hosts with a win on Wednesday night but that outcome is as big as 5/1 (PaddyPower) while the draw is unfancied 16/5 (Bet 365).

Betting Angles

Atletico Madrid are a little too skinny for my liking here but backing the hosts to win in a game that features Under 4.5 Goals will boost the odds to a backable 10/11 (Ladbrokes) shot.

While Diego Simeone has clearly given his side more license to attack this season, I suspect it could be a classic case of the Spaniards winning in solid rather than spectacular fashion on Wednesday night.

Neither of the two sides have any real need to force the issue and Maurizio Sarri will almost certainly approach this fixture with more caution than that of Feyenoord and Celtic.

What's more, all five of Lazio's Group E encounters have gone under the 4.5 goal barrier, and it's hard to envisage a high-scoring shootout in the Spanish capital given that both sides are already assured of place in the last 16.

It's also worth noting that Lazio are suffering from a sustained bout of travel sickness in Europe's top tier competition, with their only away success in their last 10 matches a smash and grab 2-1 win at Celtic on matchday two.

With all of that in mind, coupled with the fact this combination has clicked in 11 of Atletico Madrid's 15 wins in all competitions this season so far, supporting the same wager on Wednesday night looks worthy of interest at 10/11 (Ladbrokes).

Moving on to a player-based selection, I'll also put up Antoine Griezmann To Score or Assist at 5/6 with PaddyPower.

The Frenchman is arguably in the best form of his career at the moment , having racked up 15 goals and two assists in 20 appearances this season, and his star quality could be the difference as the curtain come down on Group E.
