Top Football Tips

TUESDAY was another dramatic night and I called the Rangers v Aberdeen game badly wrong.

Without top scorer Sam Cosgrove I reckoned the Dons would struggle but fair play to Derek McInnes who put one over Steven Gerrard with what I saw described as a “tactical masterclass”.

There was no live coverage of the Scottish Cup tie due to UEFA rules so I watched an impressive Juventus qualify by overturning a 2-0 deficit against Atletico Madrid then saw the Man City goals as they demolished Schalke.

In what's a wide open Champions League either of those teams are capable of going all the way.

I had a few winners on my Champions League preview but my only success on the top tips was a 7-2 btts double with the third leg void and that just about made it a break-even day.

Greg's nap was a 4-5 winner with Falkirk scoring but tip of the day went to Chelseagirl who suggested 2-0 Aberdeen at 50-1 and that was some shout.

On Wednesday we have the final two Champions League quarter-finals and both are nicely poised after 0-0 draws in the first leg.

Tie of the night is Bayern Munich v Liverpool and while there is no doubt this could go either way I'm siding with Jurgen Klopp's men and scoring an away goal could be crucial for them.

Barcelona should take care of Lyon at the Nou Camp and I'm backing the Spaniards plus goals.

I've posted a preview on the Champions League games and check out kevinmac's thoughts on Bayern v Liverpool here.

Tonight's other tie was also 0-0 but I'm on Barcelona and over 2.5 goals at 1-2 with McBookie when they entertain Lyon. The French won't stop Lionel Messi who is 11-5 to score first.

Elsewhere there are seven Championship games and as usual they are tough to call in midweek. I've picked out a 1pt btts treble.

I'm putting the same Top Treble as is in Wednesday's Daily Record and I'm taking Messi to score first as the Super Single. I tipped Cristiano Ronaldo on my Juve preview and Messi often follows him in.

2pts Super Single

  • Messi to score first
  • (11-5, Unibet)

3pts Top Treble

  • Liverpool to score
  • Barcelona & over 2.5 goals
  • Norwich
  • (5-2, McBookie)

1pt Both to Score Treble

  • Nottm Forest v Aston Villa
  • QPR v Rotherham
  • West Brom v Swansea
  • (47-10, Betfred)

Commented on the previous thread, but I’m joining Hull with a small wager in Iceland. The price is just too big, especially at Betway, given the form of the two sides in this cup competition.

    1/3 Stake:

    Valur v Afturedling

    BTTS @ 7/5 (Betway)

As soon as the bank is open tomorrow and I’ve sorted out why I cannot deposit with betfred on a new acct creation, I’ll be sharing a juicey 6 way acca before midday. Last nights 4 way landed for a nice 15/1, but after I used oddschecker and saw the gulf in prices for my proposed bet, I absolutely must get my betfred account up and running – especially since a £10 deposit on a new account gives you £30 of free bets.
The last time I opened A new acct, was with betfair 18 months back, I took them for £3900 on my first bet.
My choices much like last night are with good reasoning, look overpriced and the matches ( most of them ) are quite mismatched so the 192.25/1 for this acca is worth waiting for. Please be patient and don’t troll me. Expect my bet will be up between 10am and 12 midday. It also gives me around 7 hrs to do some stat checking. If in that time I see some banana skins, I’ll amend the bet.
I’ll see you guys after 10am.

    Bayern Munich v Liverpool
    Liverpool to win at 5/2*****(NAP)
Bayern have to come out to play in this tie the only other option is to play for a draw and hope they go through on penalties but the crowd won’t allow that so my assumption is they will try and win this game, only problem is if they do that they know they could be caught out.Liverpool limited Bayern to pretty much nothing in the first leg and should have won the game but they didn’t take their chances. The tie is finally balanced and an away goal could open the flood gates as it would mean Bayern needing to score two which won’t be an easy ask. This tip isn’t biased Liverpool have been knocked all season but what the average joe has failed to realise is that Liverpool have actually gone through the 30 games in the league thus far without breaking a sweat and are toe to toe with Man City which tells you how good a side this Liverpool team are.Correct score 1-3
    Best of luck

    • GigiKenzo 5 years ago

Bear in mind it’s not the prem and Liverpool’s away record in the CL this season does not make for good reading. If it is anything they might be the ones playing for pens. Gl still

    • sean567 5 years ago

Not won away from home in Europe in last 6 matches Gigi. I get what maccas saying if Liverpool score then that will open Bayern up, but Bayern will be thinking the same thing. They score and Liverpool will have to open up.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

It’s knockout mate,Liverpool will be looking to score no matter what,Van Djik back also, kimmich and Muller suspended for Bayern,i see Pep Guardiola has stated he would like to see Bayern progress,no surprises there i don’t think he would want to meet Liverpool in the next round.

    • boabee8867 5 years ago

sorry but Liverpool not having won any of their last 6 matches away from home will have absolutely no bearing on tonites outcome…its all about how they perform tonite that will decide who goes throo……..

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Exactly @boabee8867 it’s knockout football, losing away games in the group stages is no biggie when your home is a fortress, win your home games and teams tend to progress.

    • sean567 5 years ago

I never said it would have an effect on tonight’s game. I was pointing out their form away from home points to the fact it won’t be as easy as just turn up and pump one of the best teams in Europe 3-1. Although not gospel , Form is used for a guide on every sport and only a fool would ignore it. Liverpool’s away form suggests it will be a tough night, that’s all.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

@sean Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe,Fact.

    • sean567 5 years ago

I agree they are Macca. What I don’t agree with is boabees assessment that form has no influence on the outcome of a match. Form affects confidence which has a huge impact on any sportspersons mindset.

    • acsafc 5 years ago

‘Liverpool have actually gone through the 30 games in the league thus far without breaking a sweat and are toe to toe with Man City which tells you how good a side this Liverpool team are’
You were close to going 9 points clear a few weeks ago lol

    • boabee8867 5 years ago

Sean the 6 games you mentioned you appeared to be hinting towards stats as opposed to form….yes form plays a part . but once you get your toe to the line no matter your sport anything can happen…that’s the fantastic thing about competing …no matter your sport the outcome is determined by your performance on that day /night .it’s not determined because your form has been good or indifferent ..

Todays 6 way acca sponsored ( in part ) by betfred‘s new acct ( deposit £10, get £30 in free bets ) is:

    Notts Forest/ Villa btts YES @ 8/11
    Birmingham win @ 5/4
    QPR win @ 10/11
    West Brom win @ 10/11
    Norwich -1 h/c @ 6/4
    Derby -1 h/c @ 9/2

    pays 193.76/1 + stake.

I’ll do a short paragraph shortly for each of the games. As of last nights 4 way acca, all 6 prices look overly generous, rather mismatched and have every chance of landing. If you’re not confident on the 2x h/c’s, you can swap them for straight wins but obviously the potential returns won’t be so dramatic. Check your odds on oddschecker, the 6 way price variation between bookies is upto 50/1 worse if you pick the wrong bookie. If you have no betfred acct, capitalise by grabbing £30 of free bets + 30 casino spins with a £10 bet placed. I have a £10 on this, maybe an acca insurance bet might also be an option.
Good luck folks, short match summaries coming shortly.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

      Notts Forest/Villa
Forest are doing all the right things at home, but their away form is holding up their push into the top 6. They can score goals and against decent opposition, they can also concede too.
Villa come here having won the Birmingham Derby, so they’ll be buoyed by that. With both teams fancying a slim chance of making the playoffs, both teams will be going for this. Either team would settle for a 1 nil win before kickoff and this match is too tough to call, but I do believe it is a recipe for BTTS to land.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

      Birmingham/Millwall
Birmingham having survived last years trapdoor in the final minutes of the last league game had it all against them when this campaign kicked off. They have surprised me and given my step dads recent ill health, my family of rams fans have backed off on the weekly ” Birmingham are c*&p ” jokes. I guess the jokes on us. Whilst not in blistering form, they have managed a mid table position with some good results and now look unlikely to be involved in the trapdoor scrap. Yes they lost to Villa which must of hurt, but the bigger picture is that Villa are/were a much more complete side and Birmingham are doing the right things to pick up points where they can. They’re still within a shout of a top 6 finish ( If Derby/Bristol/West Brom ) + others slip up and a win in theory could put them right in the mix. With home advantage, against a Millwall side that got beaten at the weekend by a Bolton side that doesn’t even have a training ground by a score of 2-1. Birmingham have a rather good defence at home too.
Millwall are being sucked into the trapdoor fight. Their results are awful and being beaten by Bolton must hurt like a Tyson right hook. Millwall have lost 4 league games on the bounce, conceding 10 in the process. They’ve also lost 14 from 18 on the road, so they travel worse than a keg of Guinness !!. Just 1 point above the top 3 and they’re in a mess !!

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

      QPR/Rotherham
With just 1 league win in 12 ( 1W, 3D, 8L ), QPR are in all sorts of problems, they don’t just struggle for goals, but they’re dreadful at the back. Over the last 12 games, they’ve leaked an average of over 1.9 goals per game. Just a good job they’re playing possibly the 2nd worst team in the championship. If McClaren can’t grab a slim victory against Rotherham, then he really does need to consider his managerial options.
Rotherham are quite the draw specialists, maybe that is what they’re hoping to do to stay up and others fairing worse. Maybe that will keep them up. Oooh look, I can see a flying pig!! With QPR conceding 2 or more goals in their last 9 league matches, Rotherham should score tonight, but Rotherham have not won a single away game in their last 18 tries.
Maybe BTTS is the way forward on this one, but I’ll stick to my original thoughts and say a QPR win.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

      West Brom/Swansea
Winless in their last 3 games, they’re in danger of freefalling out of the top 6 ” Derby County Style ” ( I’m allowed to poke fun out of Derby, I’ve supported them all my life ). If they don’t turn around their form soon, they can forget their playoff chances and with Norwich/Leeds/Sheff Utd rarely putting a foot wrong, a top 2 finish is unlikely. They’ve just sacked their manager ( reminiscent of Gary Rowett’s sacking at Birmingham ) – only West Brom were further up the table !!
West Brom used to be a powerhouse at home, until Derby ran riot around Christmas, the home wheels have fell off the bus and they’re winless at home in 6 games now. With a caretaker manager in place, they have a chance to find their feet against a Swansea side that have struggled to adjust to life in the championship when they were both relegated.
Swansea have conceded in their last 9 trips on the road, and although they’re never going to get much further up the table than where they are now, they are playing against a side that I believe has conceded in 83% of its matches at home. HOWEVER, West Brom are the 2nd highest scorers in the league, and this coupled with Swansea’s regular conceding in the last 9 games on the road, I just think they won’t be able to contain West Brom.
Sticking to the West Brom win prediction, although statistically, BTTS has a good chance to deliver too.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

      Norwich/Hull
With the Canaries 2 pts clear of Leeds and a relatively easier game next up away to basement whipping boys Rotherham, Norwich have 1 hand on being crowned championship champions. Its simple. They’re 4 pts clear of 3rd place Sheff Utd and if they don’t stutter their lines, they’ll keep Leeds on their coat tails all the way to May.
Norwich have the best attack in the league – particularly at home, scoring 38 times from 18 home matches and I just see them in a different class to Hull who are just winding down the clock until May.
Hull are having some good results at the KCOM, but on the road, they’re awful. They’ve lost 4 on the spin, scoring just once, and Saturdays 3 nil defeat to Forest was just one of many bad away days. They’ve conceded 35 goals in 18 away matches and including their last 2 away trips, they’ve lost on the road by 2 or more goals in 67% of their matches away from home.
Hull could be on the receiving end of a Canaries side that have a swagger about them, Hull don’t look a threat going forward, they’ve a leaky defence facing the leagues top scorers who top the table, with Momentum and a Top 1 spot to defend. I think tonight is going to be a bad day at the office for any Hull fans.
A conservative -1 h/c for Norwich should coast in tonight. Norwich could well win to nil too. The stats don’t lie.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

      Derby/Stoke
For only the 2nd time this season, Derby have lost points from a game in which they’ve scored first. Derby should of put Sheff Wed to the sword, but Sheff Wed did equalize after the restart. Derby finished very strong, but failed to grab all the spoils. It would of been better obviously to have 3pts in the bag after beating Wigan, but after our wretched February, we seem to of turned over a new leaf. Sadly, Mason Bennett has a foot injury after his worldly goal against Wigan, Mount and Bryson back in squad training but will use the international breakl to their advantage, but Derby’s loan signing Andy King is now out until the end of the season. Great ( sarcastic great – not Frosties Tiger greeeeaaaaat ).
Derby are a decent team at home with 6 wins and 2 draws from 8, and usually, when we score first, we usually win. Of 5 of those wins, Derby have gone on to get the 2nd goal. Also, on the last 7 times at home they’ve conceded first, they’ve recovered 11 pts from 21 available, so they fight back.
After February’s dreadful results, its a miracle we only dropped from 6th to 7th for 1 game. We beat Wigan and drew level with Bristol, then the draw amazingly took us 1 pt above Bristol and back into the top 6. With West Brom and Middlesbrough having a wobble now, they are catchable. But Derby are a tough team to beat on home soil.
Stoke are winless in 10 away games ( D7, L3 ). Thy’ve struggled to adapt to life in the 2nd tier and whilst they were early favourites to grab auto promotion, it just hasn’t happened. Stoke tempted Derby’s gaffer Gary Rowett with a large war chest to spend, results never came and they’ve struggled all season. Hence Rowett got a taste of ” The grass isn’t greener on the other side “. Stoke’s last 4 draws have seen unders 2.5 land, and all of their last 3 away defeats have been 2 nil. They’ve also conceded 12 goals in their last 10 away matches ( no wins ).
Derby’s home record speaks for itself, I think we’ve got the February monkey off our backs and we have a rather easier run in to the season end than most in the top 6. We do have goals in us, but we’re just lacking that 20 goal striker. But I do think we’ll win this game. I just hope I’m not pushing my luck in opting for a mouth-watering 9/2 to cover a -1 h/c.
Good luck tonight, I hope everyone has a great night of results.

    Bayern Munich v Liverpool

Should be a good game and I’m looking forward to both champions League fixtures tonight.

Liverpool haven’t convinced me in the champions League this season and have struggled in away fixtures, losing all 3 conceding 5 and scoring only 1 in the process.

Sadly for them, tonight they face Bayern, a team with very strong champions league form in recent years, with a home record of 2 wins and a draw this season, scoring 8 and conceding 2.

We all know how well the Germans can manage these games and I think we’ll see a fairly routine, albeit narrow victory for Bayern tonight.

    Bayern win 11/10 (NAP)
    Bayern O1.5 TG’s (NB)

    NAP
    Bayern Munich v Liverpool
    Most goals 2nd half Evens
I very rarely lump on a bet but do occasionally when one comes up that I just can’t see past.
How do both teams approach this. Munich will not want to concede a goal because it means they can only qualify by winning the game. Liverpool won’t want to concede early for obvious reasons. So I see a real cagey 1st half with both teams sussing each other out and not knowing how to approach it.
Queue the second half where the game will open up and we will see end to end football. The longer it goes on the more Bayern will go for it leaving them vulnerable to Liverpool’s counter attack and we could see a goalfest depending on how early the first goal comes in the second half.
    GL if you follow

    • newts68 5 years ago

Anyone’s opinions welcome before I lump on. Cheers everyone 👍
