Defeat to Dunfermline punched a huge hole in Falkirk’s League One promotion hopes a week ago but they’re still dreaming of Scottish Cup success and are two games away from their third final appearance this century.
Standing in their way this evening are Championship side Ayr United, who incidentally have never made it all the way to the final.
Both teams have enjoyed a relatively trouble-free route to the quarter-finals. Ayr have seen off 6th tier side Pollok, Championship strugglers Cove and League Two club Elgin City, while Falkirk thumped Highland Leaguers Wick Academy, disposed of fellow League One side Alloa and dealt brilliantly with the potential banana-skin of a trip to the much-lauded Darvel with a a 5-1 win.
That defeat to the Pars was Falkirk’s first in 10 games and they boast the best home form in League One.
It’s a measure of the Bairns’ form that the bookies rate them favourites against a side from the division above. Bet365 go 13/10 on the home win versus 17/10 for the visitors.
That said, Ayr’s away form is the joint-best in the Championship. The Honest Men have exceeded expectations this season and are still in the promotion hunt in the Championship under Lee Bullen, but a dip in form has seen them slide down to fourth and eight points behind leaders Queen’s Park.
It sets us up for a fascinating clash, live on BBC Scotland tonight. No doubt that Falkirk will be more than a match for for Ayr with a strong home support behind them which might just swing things in their favour.

Like Macca says, Liverpool will attack from the first minute and I’ve watched plenty of Real this season, they’re no world beaters at all at all, I can’t see Liverpool not scoring at least once and they’re more than capable of scoring 2 or more.. IF Liverpool can qualify, there’ll be absolutely no stopping them imo, Bayern were impressive against PSG, but Liverpool can score multiple goals against any team at Anfield so happy to take them at massive odds to win the CL outright. I think it’s impossible for Liverpool to score 3 or 4 at Madrid without Madrid scoring, even though Madrid haven’t been that good this season they still are a great pedigree in the Champions league, i can’t think of many teams that have won there by that score.
