THERE were goals, goals, goals in the SPL last weekend as the top flight bounced out of cold storage with a bang.

William Hill offered 5-6 over 16.5 goals and it was easily beaten by a haul of 25 with every team on target except Aberdeen.

Celtic and Dundee United meet tonight and were responsible for seven of the strikes – with deadly duo Gary Hooper and Johnny Russell netting five between them.

Twenty-goal Hooper, being eyed by Norwich among others, is my first-scorer choice at 7-2 with Betfred and is 10-11 to net.

Russell is much bigger at 11-1 with Paddy Power and after his weekend hat-trick at Kilmarnock is good value at 7-2 to hit the target with Celtic missing injured keeper Fraser Forster.

There should be plenty of goals at Parkhead with both sides possessing good attacking players and United tending to concede goals. It was 2-2 when the sides met at Tannadice and over 3.5 goals pays a best 13-8 at sportingbet while over 4.5 is 17-5 at William Hill.

Both teams score is 11-10 at Ladbrokes and it's nice odds against.

United battled back from 2-0 down to get a draw the last time the sides met and are 10-1 at William Hill to come from behind to win or draw.

However, I'm on a Celtic win at 1-3 with Ladbrokes and William Hill as they try to build a big lead before resuming Champions league action. United are 9-1 at William Hill.

Recommendations

Hooper to score first
(7-2, Betfred)

Both teams to score
(11-10, Ladbrokes)

Both teams to score is indeed a great shout here, Celtic’s defence has been solid but Forster, Ambrose and Wilson are all out and Dundee United’s games have been goalfests.

I fancy an entertaining game under the lights and 3-2 Celtic at 28/1.

Paddy, no Forster and Wilson could be big losses but as you say I think Celtic will outscore United and hopefully we’ll see a few goals.

Bets for tonight. Only betting on the Celtic game.

£50 Mulgrew to score anytime @ 11/2 (hills)
    £10 Mulgrew First Goalscorer @ 14/1 (hills)
£40 Gary Hooper First Goal @ 7/2 (Betfred)
£50 Gavin Gunning to score anytime 16/1 (lads)

I’ve opted to go with Gavin Gunning to score anytime. The 6ft 2 defender is always a good choice for set pieces and likes to throw himself forward. Celtic could be exposed at the bag so 16/1 in my opinion is far too big for him to score anytime. He is generally priced at 8/1 elsewhere and as short as 11/2 with Betfred.

Good luck to everyone whatever you decide.

Chris, I’ve bet Gunning a few times and you’re right 16-1 is too big. I’m going Hooper first and both teams to score for starters. Top tips should be up soon.

Your bonkers bet in the record is 3-1 Celtic
I fancy the Villa score to be the same
£5 Dbl at Hills is paying £605

  4. Chris Guy 11 years ago

Eddie your double returns £1430 at Victor Chandler and Coral. William hill returns £1265 so alot bugger returns than you think. Where did you get your calculations from? 10/1 and 22/1 with Hills and 10/1 and 25/1 with Victor Chandler and Coral.

  5. Eddie 11 years ago

Ive got the hills app on my phone and im only getting 10/1 for each of the two correct scores
Paddy power says im only getting £425 for the Dbl

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

Eddie, look at oddschecker or betrescue for who is paying biggest.

  6. Guido 11 years ago

Both 3-1 scorelines are 10/1 with both Hills n Bet365. par for the course for 3-1 scorelinesid say might get the odd 11/1 or 12/1 so Eddie is correct with £605 return forra fiver at Hills

What’s this Gunning guys record, does he score many goals? Maybe i should watch a bit more SPL action and find these things out…lol

    • Milesey 11 years ago

hahaha, if you want a snooze then watch scottish football, i never bet on it and never watch it !

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

Milesey, it’s been decent to watch this season. Look at Saturday with loads of goals and pretty competitive when you take Celtic out of the equation. Teams like Dundee Utd, Killie, Aberdeen and Inverness playing well so it’s not as bad as you think.

    • Milesey 11 years ago

It is bad hahhaha, you get alot of goals in the Isthmian league, is that what your comparing scottish football too ? haha, Players who can’t cut it in the english leagues end up playing scottish football Gary Hooper, went from playing at Scunthorpe to Celtic haha, and another Anthony Skokes !

I heard Barnes-Homer at Macclesfield is being linked with a move to the scottish premier league ?

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

Goals doesn’t mean it’s bad. Arsenal 7, Newcastle 3 was great too watch. I’d rather have goals even if from mistakes than loads of cagey 0-0s. Hooper’s a bad example when Premier League clubs are queuing up trying to sign him and if he goes it will be for around £10m. Stokes came up here on loan from Arsenal and won a £1million move after hitting a few goals for Falkirk. Plenty of players have left Scotland and done well – what about Steven Fletcher, Mikel Arteta and Nikica Jelavic to name but three. Wigan picked up McCarthy and McArthur from Hamilton and McCarthy in particular is worth a fortune.

Milesey, I don’t want to keep this debate going all day because you have your opinion and I have mine but I’ve to say it was poor stuff from Southampton v Everton last night and in both leagues you see good games and bad ones. I don’t support Celtic or Rangers but I’d like to see Rangers back in the top flight to improve the competition.

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

John, he’s a defender so poses the usual threat from set-pieces. But also has a fierce shot and has banged in a couple of long-rangers.

  8. Eddie 11 years ago

I try not to watch to much scottish football
My pub only shows Stevenage games anyway

  9. Dicobhoy 11 years ago

Your slagging hooper off ,is he not the player Norwich and a few other teams in the premier are offering 5mill + for him

  10. Jonathan Grieve 11 years ago

Well said Paul,Scottish football isn’t as bad as people make out. Hooper could hold his own in England the way Jelavic has and I see Wanyama is being linked with a move 2 Arsenal. If and when he goes 2 England I think he will b phenomenal

  11. John 11 years ago

Gone for a small bet on Gunning, those defenders that go forward for set pieces are worth a pop, 9/1 with paddy power

  12. john g 11 years ago

England national team, hahahahaha, what a joke.

  13. Craig alves 11 years ago

My opinion is EPL is overrated, Prem league winners and Champs league winners out at the group stages while Celtic qualify for last 16, in a group on par with Chelsea group. The only reason Scottish football is so far behind the Prem league is £££ but celtic can still hold their own at the top :)

  14. Eddie 11 years ago

Wanyama would do well in the EPL just like Jelavic Snodgrass Mackie Naismith etc Because they dont play for the so called “Big Clubs” they possibly dont get the recognition they deserve
Most of the Big High profile players are not English
And because of sky tv money bringing in so many foreigners the English National team will suffer

  15. Chris Guy 11 years ago

John Gunning is 16/1 at Ladbrokes so taking 9/1 with Paddy Power is criminal. Gunning is 3rd top Goalscorer for Dundee Utd this season, albeit with only 3 goals but still a decent record for a defender.

  16. John 11 years ago

Unfortunately chris i live too far away from any big bookies so have to go with an independent one who only takes paddy power prices, so 9/1 is not bad if he scores tonight

  17. james mccann 11 years ago

think milesey should stick to the horses lol,i am with you paul spl aint as bad as some would have you beleive,i am a celtic supporter though.
