I had some free time on Saturday and reached out to Rizz and offered to cover the Lucky 15 bet.
Rizz unfortunately drew a blank on Saturday, with a couple of his selections hitting the crossbar with them finishing in second place.
Hopefully I can find some winners on what looks like a pretty quiet Sunday in terms of quality racing.
Campeona 2/1 – Pontefract 6.15
This looks like a decent little race, and you can arguably make claims for nearly all of them.
I was initially tempted by the Jim Goldie runner Letsbefrank. He is a previous winner of this contest back in 2024. Apprentice jockey Laurence Young has tended to get on well with this horse, and she’s good value for her 5lb claim. The step back up in trip looks interesting, and I think we can expect a good run.
That aside, I’ve opted to take a chance on the Sir Mark Prescott runner in Campeona. My selection arrives here as only a three-year-old and is in receipt of a decent amount of weight from her rivals. She also arrives here in a rich vein of form, having won her last three outings. She has a tendency to hold an awkward head carriage and hang under pressure; however, having watched a few replays of her previous races, she always finds when push comes to shove. A further step up in trip looks like a good move from connections, and this three-year-old has every chance of landing the four-timer under jockey Luke Morris.
Speed For Fun 1/1 – Tramore 1.45
I had some joy last time out when tipping up a Willie Mullins French import, and I’ve opted to go down that route once more in the shape of Speed For Fun.
The price of even money isn’t exactly anything to shout about, but I can see that price shortening overnight, and I’ll be extremely disappointed if my selection can’t get off the mark at the third attempt of asking.
Speed For Fun should already have a win to his name since switching to the obstacles, but a last-flight fall on stable debut back in May erased that. He had the race in the palm of his hands on that occasion before falling, and I’m sure connections were devastated when they saw their charge fluff the last.
Speed For Fun then ran another encouraging race on his most recent outing, finishing second to the odds-on shot Gambino, who hailed from the in-form Skelton yard, which at the time couldn’t do much wrong with their summer jump horses.
This looks like an ideal opportunity for my selection to finally get off the mark, and if he jumps well, then I think he wins with no issues.
Storm Force 3/1 – Southwell 4.10
I may be a part-timer now on the thread, but if you followed me whilst I was posting more often, then you’ll know I was and still am a huge fan of the Wathan Racing team.
I’ve opted to roll the dice with their runner here in Storm Force. 3/1 seems a tad short on the back of a horse who hasn’t been seen in over a year, and of course race fitness has to be taken on trust in this instance.
With that said, he looks like a nicely bred horse, which is shown in his price tag ( 230,000 breeze-up buy ). He hasn’t been seen since being a turned-over favourite on debut back in May. He was sent off as short as 4/7 on that occasion but could only manage a third-place finish, having raced with the choke out. He’s since been gelded and obviously had his issues having been off the track for a long time, but I think he could be a cut above this lot if ready to go on the back of a break. Jockey James Doyle does the steering.
ddjob 10/3 – Southwell 4.40
The horse I like in this contest is the Ed Walker trained Oddjob. I’m a huge fan of the Shoemark and Ed Walker combo, and I think this horse has a big chance of getting off the mark at the second time of asking.
I think you have to take on the market principle in this contest. If I’m honest, I was surprised to see Black Orchid marked up as favourite to begin with. She’s nicely bred, has the benefit of an extra run and has young Billy Loughnane on board, but when I look at the form of her two races to date, I thought it looked quite weak.
The horse that I thought brought some decent form to the table was my selection Oddjob. He finished fourth on debut at the start of last month, but the second-placed horse has come out and won twice since and now has an OR of 92. My selection did finish around 7L behind on debut, but it was an encouraging effort nonetheless, and there is every reason to believe he can take a big step forward for the run.
