Thursday Football Bet of the Day see’s me focus on the full card in the Italian Serie A. I had planned on picking my best two selections for a double, but following the likely postponement of Inter’s trip to Bologna, I’m fully focussing on goals in Rome.

Inconsistent Lazio play host two surprise package Empoli at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday afternoon. The hosts come into this in 8th, but are only one point off city rivals Roma in 6th, whilst the visitors are 10th, four points behind their opponents.
Lazio rounded off 2021 with back to back victories, defeating Genoa and Venezia both with a 3-1 score line. Since a 4-0 defeat in Naples at the end of November, Maurizio Sarri’s side have taken 10 points from their last five fixtures, scoring on 14 occasions. Only the two Milan clubs have outscored Lazio in Serie A, with no side scoring more than their tally of 25 at home. The Biancocelesti have struggled defensively though, conceding on 34 occasions, keeping only two clean sheets.
Empoli suffered their first defeat in six matches just before Christmas, as they succumbed to a 2-4 defeat against title challengers AC Milan. Those two goals kept up the Azzuri’s impressive scoring record, with them scoring in each of their last nine in Serie A and 11 of their last 12, only failing to score against champions Inter. Like Lazio, Empoli have struggled defensively this season, conceding in 13 of their last 14 in Serie A, with Aurelio Andreazzoli’s side also conceding on 34 occasions.
Bet of the Day
It should be an open and entertaining clash in the capital as Lazio play host to Empoli. There’s been 38 goals in lazio’s nine home fixtures this season, no ground in Serie A has saw more. Given both sides have scored a combined total of 69 goals at the halfway stage and that they’ve both conceded 34 goals each this season, keeping only five clean sheets between them, there should be plenty of goals at the Olimpico. Both teams to score has landed in 68% of both sides matches this season, with over 2.5 goals landing in 15 of Lazio’s 19 matches this term and in 13 of Empoli’s Serie A fixtures. Given both sides records at both ends of the pitch, it’s very likely we’ll see both sides scoring here and that should lead us to over 2.5 goals.
