Not the perfect start to the season, but not a disaster either. One selection landed, one didn't, and a promising lead elsewhere evaporated late on, turning what looked a certain winner into a stake back instead of a payout. Frustrating, but part of the game.
This week brings three fresh angles built entirely on what actually happened last weekend, real underlying numbers, real quotes, and patterns stretching back a full season where it matters. One side has one of the most reliable home scoring records in the division. Two others each looked far more open than their scorelines suggested. And a newly promoted underdog has already shown no fear of the bigger names above them.
Three picks, three markets, one method, dig past the result to the performance underneath.
Wrexham vs Watford
Wrexham's home scoring record last season provides the strongest support for this selection. They scored in 22 of their 23 home matches, a 95.7% hit rate, with a 2-0 defeat against Millwall their only blank. Wrexham averaged 1.78 goals per home game and scored at least twice in 12 of 23, while both teams scored in 17, the joint-highest rate in the Championship at 74%.
The corresponding fixture also supports the angle, with Wrexham and Watford drawing 2-2 at this ground last season. Watford kept only two clean sheets across 23 away matches, while their opening performance showed similar defensive weaknesses despite a 2-1 victory over Southampton. They conceded 1.71 xG and three big chances while recording only 34% possession.
Wrexham scored only once at Cardiff last weekend despite carrying the greater threat, hitting the woodwork twice and controlling long periods. That provides a reminder that strong attacking performances do not always produce two goals.
Their longer-term home record remains persuasive, particularly against a Watford defence that rarely kept clean sheets on the road. Wrexham's scoring rate and last season's 2-2 meeting make the price attractive.

QPR vs Bolton
QPR and Bolton both produced open matches on the opening weekend, with their attacking quality accompanied by clear defensive weaknesses. QPR won 3-1 at Portsmouth after generating 2.04 xG, with Ilias Chair scoring twice and creating the other goal during an influential attacking performance.
The scoreline did not reflect the number of chances conceded by Julien Stephan's side. Portsmouth generated 2.00 xG and forced Pierce Charles into an important double save shortly after half-time, followed by further stops during added time. Stephan was also unhappy with QPR's failure to finish the game earlier as Portsmouth pushed players forward late on.
Bolton's 2-1 victory over Preston followed a similar pattern. They led twice and controlled long periods but still conceded five big chances, with Jusef Erabi missing a major opportunity during stoppage time. Bolton's manager acknowledged that Preston had created enough chances to hold a stronger position.
Those opening performances point towards another game containing chances at both ends, while QPR's home record adds longer-term support. Their matches at Loftus Road produced a league-high 78% over 2.5 goals rate last season, making another open contest more likely than the price suggests.
- Best Bet: Over 2.5 match goals at 93/100 with 10Bet
Luton vs Notts County
Luton and Notts County produced two of the strongest attacking performances on the opening weekend. Notts County held promotion favourites Leicester to a 1-1 draw, but their underlying numbers showed they deserved more after generating 2.27 xG compared with Leicester's 0.78.
Notts created six big chances without conceding one and struck the woodwork in both halves. It was an impressive performance from a newly promoted side returning to the EFL after an 11-year absence, particularly against opponents expected to challenge near the top of the division.
Luton's opening game was even more eventful. They trailed Reading 3-1 at half-time after Jack Marriott scored a hat-trick against his former club, before two Kasey Palmer goals in four minutes levelled the score. Substitute Gideon Kodua completed the comeback with a stoppage-time winner as Luton secured a 4-3 victory.
Both performances showed plenty of attacking quality alongside enough defensive vulnerability to support goals at each end. Notts County have lost their two leading scorers from last season and remain without Jodi Jones, which weakens their attacking options, but their display against Leicester provided strong current evidence. Luton's opener also showed they possess enough threat to recover even after falling behind.
