While many punters naturally gravitate towards backing a winner, betting on the draw can be a smart and rewarding alternative.
This is because bookmakers typically assign bigger odds to stalemates, which occur less often than victories for either team.
With that in mind, let’s examine this weekend’s fixtures and identify the games where draw outcomes present the best value.
Reading vs Wigan (Saturday, 15:00)
Wigan have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks to pull away from the English League One relegation zone and they could put another point on the board away at Reading on Saturday afternoon. Gary Caldwell's side have lost just one of their last five league matches following last week's 2-0 win over Exeter. Notably, each of the Latics' last two league games away from home have ended all square, and another stalemate could be on the cards at the Majewski Stadium on Saturday.
Only Bolton (15) have drawn more games than Reading (13) in English League One this season. What's more, four of the Royals' last six home matches have seen the points shared, further strengthening the case for a repeat against an improving Wigan side on Saturday.
Morton vs Arbroath (Saturday, 15:00)
Draws have become something of a recurring theme in Arbroath’s recent fixtures, and another stalemate could be on the cards when they travel to Cappielow to face Morton in the Scottish Championship on Saturday. Although the Red Lichties sit third in the table, they have drawn four of their last five league matches, including each of their previous two on the road.
Morton, meanwhile, have also made a habit of sharing the spoils this season, with 11 of their league matches finishing level, six of which have come in front of their own supporters. It’s also worth noting that these two sides have already played out a pair of 1-1 draws this term, and a repeat of that scoreline on Saturday looks well within the realms of possibility.
Elgin vs Clyde (Saturday, 15:00)
Clyde have been the draw specialists in Scottish League Two this season, with a league-high 14 of their 30 matches finishing honours even. That tendency has been particularly evident on the road, where eight of the Bully Wee's 15 away fixtures have ended in a stalemate.
One of those draws came against Elgin at Borough Briggs earlier in the campaign, while the other two meetings between the sides this term – both with Clyde at home – also finished level. Adding further weight to the case, Elgin were held to a 1-1 draw in a recent home clash with Dumbarton, suggesting another share of the spoils could be in store on Saturday.
