SOMETIMES I wonder if it would be better betting on two flies climbing a wall than taking on the Carling Cup and ALBA Challenge Cup.

You take a huge gamble taking on these games with many teams fielding weakened sides and others happy to exit and concentrate on the league.
Still, the games are on the coupons so punters will have a bet.

I'd definitely advise small stakes on both cups and don't go mad backing all the short-priced favourites. Some will let you down.

Let's start in England with the Carling Cup and try to pick out a couple of gems.

There are better values on aways and Ipswich should be able to take care of Exeter.

Roy Keane hates losing and although he will make changes from the side that impressively beat Middlesbrough at the weekend his picks should be good enough. Ipswich are a best 11-8 at Ladbrokes.

Derby also started their Championship with three points and should see off Morecambe. The Sky Blues are a biggest 13-10 at Ladbrokes.

Nottingham Forest must improve their away form this season to have a chance of promotion and have a chance of win on the road when they head for Bradford. Peter Taylor's Yorkshire side were a letdown at Shrewsbury on Saturday and Forest should outclass them. Back Billy Davies' men at 19-20 with William Hill.

Scunthorpe look good value at 5-6 with William Hill against Oldham after winning at Reading and QPR can thump Port Vale after routing Barnsley if they play their main men. If they don't they can't be considered at a best 2-5 with the likes of bodog and Bet365.

In Scotland, the pick of the bunch could be Queen's Park who have started the season well. They beat Livingston in the last round and could make life difficult for a Forfar side who also impressed in hammering Dumbarton in the league. Queen's are 7-4 at Bet365.

Dunfermline should reward home fans who turn up with a win against short-handed Queen of the South. They are evens with Bet365.

Partick Thistle would have been slaughtered by boss Ian McCall after their 4-0 defeat at Raith Rovers. Expect them to bounce back at home to Berwick with best price being 2-5 with Ladbrokes and Bet365.

And finally home in Ross County who should make Morton's long trip home from Dingwall a miserable one. Take County at 8-11 withthe likes of 888sport and Paddy Power.

If you're looking for a shock look no further than Chesterfield who face a Middlesbrough decimated by international call-ups. Chesterfield were strong at their old Saltergate home last season and promise to be just as good at the b2net. They were 3-1 with Ladbrokes but they and many others are offering 11-4 although that could be cut further by kick-off.

Tuesday Treble

  • Norwich, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle (Pays just over 5-2 at Totesport)
