THE fixture computer has thrown up an absolute cracker for the opening weekend of the SPFL Premiership season as Dundee United host city rivals Dundee after unfurling the Championship flag.
There hasn't been a derby for the last two years with these sides passing each other in jumping between divisions and absence certainly hasn't made the heart grow fonder.
Dundee impressed after winning promotion last term as Tony Docherty steered them to a top-six finish against the odds in his first season as a manager after years of being assistant to Derek McInnes.
Dundee United will be looking to do the same on their return to the top flight but doubts still remain about Jim Goodwin, especially after his side started the new campaign with a defeat to Falkirk in the League Cup.
However, the Tannadice side responded with three successive wins and will get a better idea of how they're shaping up after taking on a Dundee team who look to have recruited well in the summer.

Although Dundee United have home advantage for this one, Dundee look like the better team for me and could offer some value at 2/1 with Betfred.
Anything can happen in a derby though so it might be safer going for the half-time draw, which pays 23/20.
Former United striker Simon Murray is now on the other side of the divide after his summer move to Dens from Ross County. He grew up a Dark Blues fans so will be determined to impress and is 8/5 for anytime scorer.

It's flag day for Celtic and Brendan Rodgers' men will be looking to put on a show as the champions open the new campaign at home to Kilmarnock.
Killie proved a thorn in the side for the Hoops last term, beating them twice at Rugby Park and also claiming a draw at Parkhead. But Celtic battered them 5-0 in Ayrshire to seal the title and have been looking slick in pre-season.
They scored four times in both American friendlies as they beat Manchester City and Chelsea so it could be a long day for Kilmarnock if they concede early.
Matt O'Riley continues to be linked with a move away from Celtic but the speculation isn't affecting him and he has been scoring freely in pre-season. The playmaker is 6/5 to open the new campaign with a goal.
For a long-odds option, Kilmarnock striker Kyle Vassell is 6/1 at Bet365 to go in the book and that could stand a chance as he always puts himself about.
St Mirren v Hibernian Top Tips
The other Premiership game today is an intriguing one as St Mirren host Hibernian off the back of an emotional night in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
The Buddies battered Valur 4-1 in their first home European tie since 1987 and will head into their league opener on a high.
Betfred make them 6/4 for the win and there could be some value in that but it's a tough one to call as Hibs scored plenty of goals in their League Cup group.
Going for corners paid off for me in that clash with Valur so it's a market worth exploring again, with over 11.5 flag kicks paying 11/8.
St Mirren midfielder Alex Gogic is up against one of his old teams and for a bonkers bet he's 22/1 to score with a header at Bet365. Backing him for a card is a much safer option and he's 5/2 to go in the book.

Think Dundee are good value today. United are very hot and cold under the ironically named Goodwin.
Just a quick update for anyone who has followed my journey, my cancer markers are now at 17 from almost 100, and I’m back eating almost normally. This is after just three rounds of treatment that they initially said I was too far gone to receive. Now surgery may be an option. Moral of the story, always do your research, be your own advocate and fight like a demon for everything – doctors are not god, they like everyone else work to budgets and they will be selective if you allow it.
So I’ve still got a long road and the odds remain against me, but I face that every day I have a punt, so what’s different eh? 😊
I’ll keep fighting, keep hoping for these results to continue and hope a surgeon in England will like what he sees and take a punt on removing all evidence of disease. That is now a realistic option, so we soldier on.
I suppose while I’m here I better out a tip up!
