Birmingham escaped with a point, but the performance offered limited evidence of defensive progress before conceding six in their next match.
Their opening 0-0 draw at Sheffield United was far stronger. Birmingham produced 0.77 xG against 0.29 and created the better opportunities, leading Davies to describe the display as another step forward. The failure to score still continued an established away weakness. Birmingham managed only 18 goals across 23 away league games last season, the third lowest return in the Championship.
Their summer recruitment has focused on experience. Dael Fry joined on a free transfer from Middlesbrough, James Beadle arrived on loan from Brighton and Max Bird became their latest addition.
