The Black Cats were left licking their wounds last Friday when Nottingham Forest came to the Stadium of Light and dished out a 5-0 hammering.

It's the first major setback Sunderland have suffered since returning to the Premier League last summer, with Regis Le Bris' men defying expectations to make a push for Europe.

They now sit 12th but are still just four points behind sixth-placed Brighton and will see this clash with rock-bottom Wolves as the perfect chance to get another victory on the board.

Performances picked up a bit when Rob Edwards took over at Molineux but they've been doomed for months and have now been officially condemned to relegation.

Wolves have lost their last three in the Premier League, failing to score in each of those matches, and the players probably just want a terrible campaign to come to an end.

How the bookies view it: Sunderland to bounce back

Despite that hammering last time out, Sunderland are the favourites for this one at a best 11/8 with Coral. Wolverhampton Wanderers are as big as 43/20 with BetMGM while the draw pays 12/5 at Bet365.

Recent head to head: Tide has turned

Sunderland won 2-0 when these sides faced off at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season and that made it four games unbeaten in this fixture. But Wolves held the upper hand before that, winning four in a row against the Black Cats.

Players to watch: Enzo a danger

Enzo Le Fee has been one of the standout Sunderland signings this season, with the Frenchman providing five goals and six assists from midfield. He's 175/100 with BetMGM to score or set one up here.

The emergence of Matheus Mane has been one of the few positives for Wolves in their ill-fated campaign. The lively 18-year-old will fancy his chances against a defence that shipped five goals last time out and is 11/5 at Bet365 to score or assist.

Probable line-ups

Wolves have a pretty clean bill of health, with only Czech defender Ladislav Krejci and keeper Sam Johnstone in the treatment room.

Sunderland have a few more issues, with Jocelin Ta Bi, Romaine Mundle, Bertrand Traore, Nilson Angulo and Simon Moore set to miss out.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Sa, Doherty, Moller Wolfe, T Gomes, S Bueno, H Bueno, Andre, J Gomes, Bellegarde, Armstrong, R Gomes, Mane.

Sunderland: Roefs, Reinildo, Ballard, Alderete, Hume, Mukiele, Sadiki, Le Fee, Xhaka, Talbi, Brobbey.

MFT's X-pert tip: Under 2.5 goals

Under 2.5 goals looks the standout play when Wolves meet Sunderland.

Neither side brings convincing attacking numbers, while both remain in matches where tension and caution are likely to matter. Wolves average only 1.00 xG at home for the season, and that has dropped to just 0.46 xG across their last four home games. In that same spell they managed only 3.3 shots inside the box per game, a very low figure.

Sunderland’s recent form is better, but their away season profile is still modest. They average 0.98 xG away and 1.60 xGA. Across the last four away matches they posted 1.64 xG, but also faced difficult moments defensively. Their games often remain competitive rather than explosive.

Combined recent fixture data shows only 5.33 total xG across the two clubs’ last four relevant samples, which supports a lower-event contest. Wolves have struggled badly for chance creation, while Sunderland are unlikely to overcommit away from home in a match where points are valuable.

With both teams near the lower end of the table, game state should matter. Expect caution early, long spells without risk, and limited clear chances overall.

Anything else catch the eye?

Tottenham found Wolves hard to break down last weekend so I've a feeling this one won't be a thriller.

The bookies agree as under 2.5 goals only pays 4/5 with Bet365, although betting against BTTS is a bit better at evens with 888Sport.

Le Bris will demand a response from Sunderland after that horror show last time out so there could be some value in backing the Black Cats to win the first corner at 10/11 with William Hill.

Noah Sadiki usually puts himself about in midfield for Sunderland he's a decent evens at Bet365 to commit over 1.5 fouls.
