Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Chelsea

, KO: 13:00 Dec 24, 2023, Molineux

Fresh from securing a berth in the semi-final of the EFL Cup Chelsea travel to Molineux for a Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Blues have found things particularly difficult on their recent travels and should be in for a tough time against Wolves, who have done some good work in front of their fans lately.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are coming off a 3-0 defeat to West Ham in their previous Premier league fixture. They were mostly second best throughout the encounter and were wasteful with their few goalscoring opportunities, with Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan coming closest.

That performance will be particularly disappointing for manager Gary O’Neil as Wolverhampton Wanderers had been unbeaten in their last two matches. They are 13th on the standings, still well clear of danger and will be looking to make a push for a place in the top half.

Molineux is where Wolverhampton Wanderers have done some of their best work this season as they have claimed three wins and as played out as many draws in their last six matches. Victories over Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are among their results in that run, although they have kept just one clean sheet.

Chelsea overcame Newcastle United to secure a place in the semi-final of the EFL Cup and will be looking to use that as a springboard to kick on in the Premier League. They came from behind to settle for a 1-1 draw in normal time before claiming the upper hand in the shootout.

The result means Chelsea are now unbeaten in their last two matches having picked up a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United in their last Premier League fixture. They remain just inside the top half of the tables but could slip into the bottom half if results do not go their way this weekend.

One of the problems for Chelsea is a poor record on their travels which has gotten a bit worse in recent weeks. Mauricio Pochettino’s men travel to Molineux off the back three straight Premier League defeats on the road.

How the bookies view it

Chelsea have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at 19/20 with Paddy Power. A victory for Wolverhampton Wanderers is valued at 29/20 by Coral while bet365 is offering odds of 11/4 for a draw.

Head to head

Chelsea have a 37-31 advantage with 22 draws from 97 previous matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, Wolves are unbeaten in the five meetings at Molineux, claiming three wins in that run, including a 1-0 victory in a Premier League fixture back in April.

Players to watch

Hwang Hee-Chan is the leading scorer for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season with eight Premier League goals so far. Six of those goals have come at Molineux and the forward could be worth keeping an eye on to score anytime at 10/3 with bet365.

Cole Palmer has been one of Chelsea’s best performers this season and often matches the goals with his displays. The attacker has found the net in two of the last three Premier League matches and is priced at 13/5 by Paddy Power to maintain his scoring run.

Anything else catch the eye?

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea have been unconvincing at the back and both teams could be tipped to score at 7/10 by William Hill. The Blues have seen over 2.5 goals in four of their last five away matches and a repeat is priced at 4/5 with Unibet while bet365 is offering odds of 11/5 for over 3.5 goals.

Chelsea have gone behind in four of their last five Premier League away matches, which means Wolverhampton Wanderers could be tipped to grab the first goal on Sunday at 6/4 with BetVictor Given Wolves’ mix of wins and draws in their recent fixtures at Molineux, a double chance could be a safe option at 17/20 with William Hill.
