Brighton and Hove Albion begin their season inside the Arctic Circle on Thursday, when they face Tromso at the Romssa Arena in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League qualifying play-off. The game kicks off at 18:00 BST, with Brighton facing a side that sits third in the Eliteserien behind Viking and Bodo/Glimt.
Jorgen Vik's team reached this stage in strong form, beating Aalesund 6-2 and CFR Cluj 7-1 on aggregate across their Conference League qualifiers. Those results followed an earlier Europa League qualifying defeat against Hradec Kralove.
Tromso's home numbers support their recent results. They have averaged 2.20 xG for and 1.05 xGA across nine home fixtures this season, giving them an xG supremacy of +1.15 per game. They have also created more than three big chances per home game, with each figure comfortably ahead of their overall seasonal average.
Their underlying performances last season were less convincing than their third-place finish suggested, but the improvement at home during the current campaign is significant. Tromso are creating more, conceding less and producing those numbers across a meaningful sample.
Brighton's away record from last season raises more concerns. They won only five of their 19 league matches on the road and collected 20 points from a possible 57, while their underlying numbers were also negative. Brighton averaged 1.34 xG and conceded 1.42 xGA per away match, leaving them with an xG supremacy of -0.08.
Fabian Hurzeler's side arrive after a perfect pre-season campaign, winning three matches and scoring eight goals, including victories over Roma and Bologna. Those games were played at home against opponents also working through pre-season, which makes the form difficult to compare with Tromso's competitive schedule.
There is also a clear difference in match fitness. Tromso are well into their domestic season and have already played several rounds of European qualifying, while Brighton's previous competitive fixture was back in May.
Team news adds to Brighton's challenge, with Evan Ferguson, Matt O'Riley, Yankuba Minteh, Carlos Baleba, Kaoru Mitoma and Stefanos Tzimas all unavailable. Pascal Struijk is also managing a knock ahead of the trip.
Record signing Luka Vuskovic is expected to make his competitive Brighton debut in central defence alongside Olivier Boscagli. The pair were preferred throughout pre-season ahead of Lewis Dunk, although they are yet to play together in a competitive match.
Bart Verbruggen has spoken about the difficulty of the assignment, using Bodo/Glimt's recent Champions League performances as evidence of the current standard in Norwegian football. Tromso sit close behind them domestically and have already shown their ability in European qualifying.
Tromso also have a goalkeeping concern after regular number one Jakob Haugaard lasted only 30 minutes of last weekend's 3-2 defeat against Molde. Ole Kristian Lauvli is expected to replace him, while Warneryd was withdrawn at half-time after recording the weakest individual rating on the pitch. Dahlqvist and Asen Larsen were Tromso's strongest performers in that defeat.
How the bookies view it
Brighton are 59/100 favourites, implying a 62.9% chance of winning, while the draw is 10/3 at 23.1% and Tromso are 19/4 at 17.4%.
Over 2.5 goals is priced at 8/11, implying 57.9%, with both teams to score available at 5/6 and carrying an implied probability of 54.5%.
Head to head: First ever meeting
This is the first meeting between Tromso and Brighton, leaving no previous head-to-head record to assess.
Player to watch: Luka Vuskovic to be threat for the Seagulls
Luka Vuskovic is set to make his first competitive appearance for Brighton, but he arrives with plenty of senior experience despite his age. He started 27 Bundesliga matches for Hamburger SV last season and played almost every available minute, contributing six goals and one assist from central defence.
His defensive numbers included 40 tackles won and 17 interceptions, showing he has already handled regular senior football at a strong European level. Vuskovic partnered Olivier Boscagli throughout Brighton's pre-season campaign, but this will be the first competitive test of their defensive partnership.
Predicted line-ups
Tromso (3-5-2): Lauvli; Vadebu, Hien, Tonnessen; Dahlqvist, Edvardsson, Jenssen, Asen Larsen, Warneryd; Nyhammer, Olden Larsen.
Brighton (3-4-2-1): Verbruggen; Vuskovic, Boscagli, Kadioglu; Wieffer, Gross, Ayari, De Cuyper; Gomez, Hinshelwood; Georginio.
Anything else catch the eye?
Brighton's price looks short when the circumstances surrounding the fixture are considered. Hurzeler's side have only recently completed pre-season, are missing six senior players and are expected to start a new central defensive partnership in a demanding away environment.
Tromso have several advantages that the result market appears to undervalue. They are match sharp, have won their two Conference League qualifying ties by an aggregate score of 13-3 and have recorded an xG supremacy of +1.15 across nine home matches. Brighton, by comparison, produced a negative away xG supremacy last season and have not played a competitive fixture since May.
Tromso's likely change in goal introduces a defensive concern for the hosts, while Brighton's absences and untested centre-back partnership create similar uncertainty at the other end. Both attacks have produced strong recent numbers, but neither defensive setup looks secure enough to trust.
The main bet is both teams to score at 5/6, with the price implying a 54.5% chance of landing.
