Spain vs Cyprus

, KO: 19:45 Sep 11, 2023, Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes
Cyprus

Fresh from putting seven past Georgia, Spain travel to Cyprus for another Group A fixture in the European Championship qualifiers. The hosts are winless in this campaign and should be no match for the superior quality of Spain.

Spain were in full attacking flow last time out as they claimed a 7-1 victory over Georgia in their previous qualifying fixture. Alvaro Morata netted a hat-trick while youngster Lamine Yamal was also on target on his debut.

It is only the second win in three qualifying matches for Spain, who are surprisingly nine points behind leaders Scotland in Group A. However, they have played two games less than the Scots, due to their involvement in the UEFA Nations League which they won after beating Croatia on penalties.

Overall, the Spaniards travel to Cyprus unbeaten in four of their last five matches across all competitions. Luis de la Fuente’s men have flexed their attacking muscles in that run as evidenced by the result in Georgia.

Cyprus were tipped as one of the weakest teams in the entire qualification campaign and they have lived up to that expectation in Group A. They have lost all four of their matches in the qualifiers and are set to finish bottom of the standings.

The Cypriots head into this clash off the back of a 3-0 home defeat to Scotland in their previous qualifying fixture. Temur Ketsbaia’s men were second best throughout the encounter and spent most of the game pinned back into their own half.

Overall, Cyprus have a woeful record in European qualifiers and have lost their last seven matches, stretching back to the previous campaign. They are on a three-match losing run on their travels in European qualifiers stretching back to the Euro 2020 campaign.

How the bookies view it

Spain are considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies with a win priced at 1/25 by bet365. An unlikely victory for Cyprus is valued at 100/1 by Ladbrokes while a draw is set at odds of 20/1 by Coral.

Head to head

Spain have lost only once to Cyprus, claiming seven wins in eight previous meetings. However, the last fixture between both teams was a Euro 2000 qualifier which ended 8-0 in favour of the Spaniards.

Players to watch

Coming off a hat-trick in his last appearance, Alvaro Morata could be worth keeping an eye on for Spain. With the likes of Dani Olmo and Nico Williams also providing support, the Spaniards could be tipped to produce over 2.5 goals at 1/3 with William Hill.

The Spaniard maintain a solid defensive record in front of their fans and have won to nil in their last five qualifying matches, a run stretching back to the previous campaign. Aymeric Laporte is likely to continue at the heart of the defence and can lead the hosts to a similar outcome at 3/10 with 10bet.

Anything else catch the eye?

Spain already led 4-0 at the break in Georgia and could be backed in the -1 first half handicap market at 11/10 with Ladbrokes. There were over 4.5 goals in that fixture and a similar outcome could be on the cards at 7/4 with William Hill.

Given the result in Georgia last time out, Spain can also be tipped to win by 4 or more goals at 11/10 with Paddy Power.
