Portsmouth vs Exeter City

, KO: 20:00 Aug 15, 2023, Fratton Park
Exeter City

Portsmouth and Exeter City will be aiming to maintain their fine start to the season when they meet in a midweek League One clash. While both teams are unbeaten, Portsmouth often do their best work at home and given their fine record in this fixture, should have the upper hand on Tuesday.

Portsmouth head into Tuesday’s clash off the back of an impressive 4-0 victory at Leyton Orient. They went into the break with a two-goal lead thanks to Marlon Peck and Colby Bishop while an own-goal from Omar Beckles and a late effort from Kusini Yengi sealed a comfortable win.

The result means Portsmouth remain unbeaten after three matches across all competitions and although it is still early days, also conforms their status as possible promotion contenders. The goals have also flowed freely for John Mousinho’s men, who have already found the net eight times in three matches this season.

One sour point for Portsmouth is that they are yet to win in front of their fans having begun their campaign with a 1-1 home draw with Bristol Rovers before travelling for their last two fixtures. However, the good news is that Fratton Park remains fortress as they have lost just once in their last 12 League One home matches, a run stretching back January.

Exeter City are also enjoying a fine start to the season and will consider themselves possible contenders for promotion. Like Portsmouth, the goals have flowed as they began their campaign with a 3-0 victory at Wycombe before edging out Crawley Town 2-1 in the Carabao Cup.

However, the goals appeared to dry up last Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 home draw by Blackpool in their previous League One fixture. It was a game of few chances as Gary Caldwell’s men struggled for quality in the final third, finishing with a single attempt on target.

Exeter City will travel to Fratton Park looking to channel their win at Wycombe Wanderers. However, their record on the road is not particularly convincing on their travels as that was their first win in nine League One away matches, suffering six wins in that run.

How the bookies view it

Portsmouth have the upper hand among the bookies with a home win priced at evens by 10bet. A victory for Exeter City is valued at 3/1 by bet365 while William Hill is offering odds of 13/5 for a draw.

Head to head

Portsmouth have a 6-3 advantage with four draws from 13 previous matches against Exeter City. They are also unbeaten in the last four meetings, claiming three wins in that run, including a 2-0 victory in the most recent fixture at Fratton Park back in January.

Players to watch
