Olympiakos vs WolvesUEFA Europa League, KO: 20:00 Mar 12, 2020, Karaiskaki Stadium
WOLVES first foray into Europe in three decades has seen them reach the last-16 of the Europa League where they will square off with Greek champions Olympiakos.
Many pundits thought that Nuno Espirito Santo's side would struggle to cope with the demands of having to contend with both continental and domestic football, however, the Old Gold are competing courageously on both fronts.
Santo's side made light work of a section that included European regulars Besiktas, Braga and Slovan Bratislava before comfortably disposing of La Liga strugglers Espanyol in the round of 32.
Standing in Wolves' way of a place in the last-eight is an Olympiakos outfit who reached the last-16 in dramatic fashion when putting Arsenal to the sword during a hard-fought contest that went into extra-time at the Emirates.
The Piraeus club were competitive and spirited against both Spurs and Bayern Munich in this season's Champions League and the the Greek giants will take confidence from their showing in north London last month
Domestically, Pedro Martins men lead the way in the Greek Super League and the hosts will go into this tussle having lost only two their last 23 matches across all competitions.
The Betting Odds
Olympiakos are as big as 2/1 with Coral to hunt down Wolves on Thursday night, while an all-square affair in Athens is at a best 12/5 with Bet 365.
Wolves are 6/4 with Boylesports to take a first leg-lead back to Molineux next midweek.
The Betting Angles
Indeed, Wolves have impressed in the Europa League this season, however, both teams have scored in five of the Wanderers seven oversea assignments this term and I like the look of a repeat on Thursday night at Evens with Bet 365.
What's more, 20 of Wolves 29 Premier League games this season have seen both teams hit the back of the net, not to mention, both sides have got on the scoresheet in three of the last four Europa League matches at this venue.
Olympiakos failed to put the ball in the back of the net when Arsenal pitched up in Athens last month, however, there was no shortage of cards and corners and I suspect that this could be a good fixture to make use of Bet 365‘s Bet Builder feature and a combination that I like the look of is over one match goal, over six corners and a card apiece at Evens.
If the Piraeus team are to tame Wolves then Martins and Co will have to try and formulate a plan to deal with Wanderers turboman Adama Traore.
Traore has given most sides the runaround this season – the Wolves winger is one of the most fouled players in Europe this term – and Olympiakos may have to revert to the dark arts to try and deal with Traore's speed and physicality.
With that in mind, value could lie in backing Olympiakos left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas to be carded at 3/1 with Bet 365.
An astronomical number of left-backs have been booked this season when directly coming up against Traore and the Greek defender looks overpriced for a caution should he be given the thankless task of trying to shackle the Molineux flying-machine
