Ipswich Town's difficult away schedule has contributed to an uneven start to their Premier League campaign, but Saturday's visit to Hull City presents a different challenge. The two clubs meet at the MKM Stadium on Saturday with a 15:00 kick off, with Hull struggling to create chances and Ipswich looking to improve a defensive record that has undermined several otherwise competitive performances.
Hull have collected ten points from eight Premier League fixtures, recording two victories, four draws and two defeats. Their opening-day 2-0 victory against Manchester United was an encouraging result, but recent performances have been considerably less convincing.
The Tigers are now without a victory in four matches and have registered only two shots on target across their last two games. That lack of attacking threat is particularly important when assessing their chances of winning this fixture. Hull have been difficult to beat at home, drawing three of their first four league matches at the MKM Stadium, but they have struggled to turn competitive performances into victories.
Their underlying statistics reflect those difficulties. Hull average 1.07 xG per Premier League fixture while allowing 1.55 xGA, leaving them with a negative balance of 0.48. They have nevertheless scored in six of their eight matches, demonstrating an ability to find the net even when their overall chance creation has been limited.
Their recent 1-1 draw against Brentford produced more encouraging attacking figures, with Hull generating 1.86 xG compared with their opponents' 1.75.
Ipswich have also collected ten points, although their record of three victories, one draw and four defeats illustrates a more unpredictable campaign. Their defensive performances remain a concern. Ipswich have conceded 16 goals across eight league matches, allowing an average of 1.97 xGA and 3.75 big chances per fixture.
However, their away defeats require context. Ipswich have lost on the road against Everton, Manchester United and Manchester City, three demanding opponents. Those results cannot automatically be used to predict how they will perform against a Hull side that has been struggling to create opportunities.
Ipswich's latest league encounter ended in a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest. They generated only 0.64 xG while allowing 2.65 xGA, suggesting their defensive problems have not been confined to matches against the strongest opposition.
Their overall attacking average of 1.21 xG is slightly better than Hull's, although the visitors will need to produce a more convincing performance than they managed against Forest.
Hull's injury concerns include Jack Butland, Darko Gyabi, Eliot Matazo and Ilyas Ansah, while Charlie Hughes, Matt Targett and Nobel Mendy have late-October return estimates. Lucas Gourna-Douath is doubtful, potentially further restricting the hosts' midfield options.
Ipswich have fewer reported concerns. Jack Taylor has returned to training following a knee injury, while Sasa Lukic continues his recovery from a groin problem.
How the bookies view it
Hull City and Ipswich Town are both available at 17/10, giving each side an implied winning probability of 37%. The draw is priced at 5/2, representing 28.6%.
Over 2.5 goals is 20/23, carrying an implied probability of 53.5%. Under 2.5 is available at 1/1, representing 50%. Both teams to score is 4/6 for Yes, implying 60%, while No is priced at 13/10, representing 43.5%.
Head to head: Tractor Boys hold a strong record over the Tigers
Ipswich have dominated recent meetings, winning four of the last five encounters with Hull and keeping clean sheets in all four victories.
Their most recent success came in March 2026, when they won 1-0 at Portman Road. Ipswich had also secured a 2-0 victory at the MKM Stadium in November 2025. The previous meeting at Hull finished 3-3 in April 2024, while Ipswich won the earlier encounter that season 3-0.
Hull retain the stronger longer-term record, with 12 victories across 25 meetings, compared with eight Ipswich wins and five draws.
Player to watch: Mohamed Belloumi constant threat for hosts
Mohamed Belloumi has made eight Premier League appearances for Hull, playing 600 minutes and scoring three goals.
The winger has recorded 22 shots, including six on target, while generating 1.22 xG. His goalscoring return has therefore been considerably better than the quality of his opportunities would ordinarily suggest.
Belloumi has also created six chances and registered 0.84 xA, demonstrating that his attacking contribution extends beyond shooting. His ability to support Oliver McBurnie could be important if Hull are to improve their recent attacking performances.
However, the hosts will need to create more opportunities for Belloumi rather than relying on him to maintain an unusually high conversion rate.
Predicted lineups
Hull City (5-4-1): Tzolakis, Coyle, Ajayi, Egan, Herrington, Giles, Belloumi, Iroegbunam, Slater, Stroud, McBurnie.
Ipswich Town (4-2-3-1): Walton, Ouattara, Diop, O'Shea, Davis, Florentino, Palacios, Fatawu, Enciso, Maede, Emersonn.
Anything else catch the eye
Ipswich Town Draw No Bet at 10/11 is the preferred selection, with Hull City's recent attacking struggles providing the strongest argument for opposing the hosts.
Hull are without a victory in four Premier League matches and have registered just two shots on target across their last two fixtures. That is a particularly concerning return for a side attempting to turn home advantage into three points.
The Tigers have won only twice in eight league games, drawing four. Three of their opening four home matches have also finished level, demonstrating how frequently they have struggled to turn competitive performances into victories.
Their underlying attacking figures reinforce those concerns. Hull average just 1.07 xG per match, compared with 1.55 xGA, leaving them with a negative balance of 0.48. Ipswich have recorded three victories from eight fixtures, one more than Hull, despite facing a demanding away schedule.
Their three away defeats came against Everton, Manchester United and Manchester City. Those results require context rather than being treated as evidence that Ipswich will struggle against every opponent on their travels.
Ipswich average 1.35 xG away from home, slightly higher than Hull's home average of 1.25. That suggests the visitors have sufficient attacking potential to trouble the hosts. The principal concern is Ipswich's defensive record. They concede 1.97 xGA per league match, rising to 2.53 on their travels, while allowing an average of 3.75 big chances per fixture.
However, Hull's recent lack of shots on target raises questions about their ability to exploit those weaknesses. With Hull struggling to create chances and Ipswich facing a more manageable opponent than several of their previous away fixtures, the visitors have a credible opportunity to secure another victory.
Ipswich Town Draw No Bet at 10/11 provides the additional protection of a refunded stake if Hull record another draw.
