Hamburg will continue their intensive pre-season preparations and their quest for consistency and stability as they host Everton at the Volksparkstadion, in what is set to be their biggest test so far.
The two sides’ pre-season preparations have differed considerably so far. Everton have already played three matches, securing just one win against Dundee FC. Against Bolton and Stoke, they failed to score a single goal.
Hamburger lost to Rapid in their first friendly, though they did score two goals (3–2), and then beat their familiar rivals Heidenheim 3–1. The Red Shorts are putting in an impressive attacking display, but in their remaining matches they need to iron out their defensive errors.
Hamburger have so far been fairly conservative in the transfer market, signing several young players on the cheap, with the obvious aim of building a team for the future.
Everton have been far more spendthrift in the transfer market, having already signed Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough for €19.3 million, Merlin Rohl from Freiburg for €25.0 million and Tyrique George from Chelsea for €21.0 million, without making a single sale.
How the bookies view it: The Red Shorts with a minimal advantage
The bookmakers are expecting a completely even match, with no clear favourite to win.
At the moment, you can back Hamburger at 27/20, whilst Everton are available at 3/2, meaning the Red Shorts have a slight edge. A draw is priced at 12/5.
Recent head-to-head: A new German-English rivalry
It is not surprising that Hamburg and Everton have never played each other before, given that neither team is a regular participant in international competitions. They have not played any previous friendly matches either, so this will be a new experience for both sides.
Players to watch: Keep an eye out for Dompe's return
This is a difficult call, as both managers are guaranteed to make unexpected decisions with the line-ups. The squads get released minutes before kick-off, making it very hard to predict which players will get more minutes and therefore end up as good picks.
Personally, I am hoping to see more from Jean-Luc Dompe, who played only 13 minutes against Rapid. The 30-year-old Frenchman was an absolute machine in the 24/25 season, but went through multiple injuries in the previous campaign. When fit, he is an incredible playmaker, and I will be on the lookout for him on Saturday.

Anything else catch the eye?
On paper, this match really does look a completely even contest. On paper, Everton should be the stronger side, but in practice they aren’t showing it.
Hamburger are impressive in attack but have problems at the back, whilst Everton aren’t half bad defensively but are struggling to score goals. This combination could either lead to a surprisingly entertaining match or result in a not-so-surprising 0-0 draw.
I expect to see a hard-fought battle in which both teams score one goal each. I don’t expect anything more than that, so I’d go for 1–1 as the correct score.
