Greece vs Netherlands

, KO: 19:45 Oct 16, 2023, OPAP Stadium
Netherlands

Greece welcome Netherlands to OPAP Stadium for a Group B fixture in the European Championship qualifier with both teams vying for second place. The Greeks are a tough nut to crack at home but Netherlands will be relying on their superior quality and should have the edge here.

With France six points clear at the top of the standings and seemingly running away with everything in Group B, the battle for second place offers more intrigue. Greece currently occupy that position, three points clear of the Dutch and will be keen to fight off all challengers.

It has been a solid enough qualifying campaign for Greece, who have claimed four wins from six matches. However, they have only beaten the lower ranked sides with their two defeats in Group B coming against France and Netherlands.

The good news for Greece is that they have maintained a solid record at home in qualifiers, winning their two matches at OPAP Stadium, including a 5-0 victory over Gibraltar. Manager Gustavo Poyet will be feeling extra confident ahead of Monday’s clash having also picked up a 2-0 victory away at the Republic of Ireland last time out in the qualifiers.

Having found things difficult at the last European Championship, it would be a great disappointment if Netherlands were to fail to attend this one. As it stands, Ronald Koeman’s men are three points off the qualifying places, although they do have a game in hand.

Netherlands do not head into Monday’s clash on the best note having suffered a 2-1 home defeat to France in their previous qualifying fixture. They fell two goals down before Quilindschy Hartman pulled one back seven minutes from time.

While it was a disappointing result, Netherlands will be keen to quickly set things back on track. They had claimed three straight wins prior to that defeat, including a 2-1 victory over Republic of Ireland in their previous away fixture in the qualifiers.

How the bookies view it

Netherlands have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at 23/20 by Coral to claim the win. A victory for Greece is valued at 11/4 by BoyleSports while Unibet is offering odds of 12/5 for a draw.

Head to head

Netherlands have only been beaten once in this fixture, claiming eight wins and a draw from 10 previous matches against Greece. The Dutch ran out 3-0 winners in the reverse fixture back in September with Wout Weghorst among the goals.

Players to watch

Giorgios Masouras has caught the eye for Greece in these qualifiers, scoring five goals in six matches so far. The attacker could be worth keeping an eye on to find the net on Monday at 4/1 with bet365.

In the absence of Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay, Wout Weghorst will be the one to watch for Netherlands. The striker has been on target in two of the last three qualifying fixtures and is priced at 9/4 by bet365 to score anytime on Monday.

Anything else catch the eye?

There is plenty of quality in the Netherlands and Greece attacks and both teams could be backed to score at 17/20 with William Hill. The Dutch have seen over 2.5 goals in their last six matches across all competitions and a repeat is priced at 11/10 with Unibet while over 3.5 goals is valued at 29/10 by BetVictor.

The Netherlands scored in both halves in their previous away fixture in the qualifiers and Monday’s clash could be tipped to follow a similar pattern at 5/2 with bet365.
